US durable goods orders rebound in April

New orders for U.S. durable goods recovered in April after March's slump, led by transportation equipment orders, government data released Friday showed. After a sharp 5.9 percent drop in March, new orders for long-lasting manufactured goods rose 3.3 percent to $222.6 billion, the Commerce Department reported.

New weld inspection system to boost rail safety in Europe

An ultrasonic device that tests the strength of rail track welds could "radically improve safety standards" on Europe's railways. Rail safety teams across Europe inspect tracks for any cracks or defects that could cause problems and if a track needs fixing it is often welded on-site, but the track inspectors have few tools to check whether the resulting welds are strong enough.

Orbital welding on the Large Hadron Collider a challenge

VideoBrief The interconnection regions between adjacent cryomagnets of the Large Hadron Collider consist of a number of lines spanning from one machine element to another, and each line requires several welds. With a radial clearance of only 45 millimeters, a machine called an automatic orbital welder closes three main busbars — lines whose main purpose is to conduct electricity. The machine makes two automatic welds to create a leak-tight assembly.

Michigan business folks remain optimistic about job demand, especially in manufacturing

Jackson County, Mich., saw a drop in jobs in April over the year before, but local business folks are optimistic about the job demand, especially in manufacturing. Nonfarm payroll jobs in April were down 700 from April 2012 levels, with job losses in government and professional and business services, but manufacturing saw a boost of 200 jobs over the year.

Central CC continues welding expansion

The wet weather hasn't put much of a damper on construction projects at Central Community College-Columbus. Ground was broken for the $2.8 million project in February. Included will be an expanded area for welding and shared classroom and locker room space. With the addition, the college's mechatronics program also will be able to spread out into some of the space currently used by the welding program, said Matt Gotschall, campus president.

Oregon sculptor turns a creative eye and welding torch to scrap metal
The Oregonian

The colorful new addition will be on display through July as part of the library's 100th birthday. The 13-foot-tall sculpture is Oregon City artist Ben Dye's most recent contribution to the Clackamas County art landscape. He also has work in West Linn, Estacada, Wilsonville and Oregon City, Ore.

Juan Esteban Moreno Montes has done it all. Landscaping, stonework, cleaning, farming, tiling, hospitality. You name it, Montes has done it. He couldn't imagine doing any of it for the rest of his life, but he didn't think he had that many options. After high school, Montes finished a semester at a liberal arts college, then dropped out.
