Seattle and US manufacturing making a comeback

Over the last seven years a Seattle company called Machinists Inc. has doubled employment from 100 to nearly 200. A few months ago it bought a building across the street to house its growing welding operation. It only plans to keep growing. The company has become a success story of survival and coming out strong after decades where American manufacturing seemed to be heading one way: overseas. But that's now turning around.

Inaugural GWAMA class land job offers, welding certificates

Since its inception, the Greater Waco Advanced Manufacturing Academy pledged to train local high school students to land technical jobs with major industrial companies. That goal was realized the night of June 4 at the academy's first graduation ceremony as a select group of seniors from the academy's inaugural class celebrated job offers with local companies.

'Training for the industry' welding school ready for students

The Industrial Arts Institute officially opened its doors to the public for the first time May 29 to show area residents the progress that's been made toward opening a welding school in Onaway, Michigan. All seems in place for the inaugural classes, which begin Aug. 4 at the former Art Van/Brewbaker building.

Smoother sailing predicted from once-stressed boat industry

Boosted by a resurgent luxury pleasure boat market, many Manatee County, Florida, boat manufacturers are planning to lay more keels in 2014 than any time in the past six years. Once an economic engine for the county, the industry is surging back from a recession that put many builders out of business. New hiring in the sector is on its way to creating more than 200 new jobs locally, while reinvigorated companies are refitting or adding onto older manufacturing buildings as they grow their operations.

Wages for construction and other skilled trades are on the rise

Wages for skilled tradesmen in the construction and mining, as well as, those in logging and manufacturing are on the rise, according to a new report from the Economist. Citing data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the report says that hourly wages have grown at an annual rate of around 2 percent for the last two years. And in April, growth of hourly earnings accelerated to 2.3 percent from 1.5 percent in early 2012.

Chasing a welding dream

It's a weekend a local family won't soon forget. An area student gives her family a life changing surprise during her graduation ceremony, and it all started with a dream and a little bit of hope. "I never dreamed of this and I'm just so blessed to have it." Yadira Mendoza has taken chasing a dream to a whole new level. Her family has fallen on tough times and weren't able to send her to college, but she never lost hope. Yadira said, "we'll make it through it, I know we will."

Company to hold job fair in Minden

Industrial trailer manufacturer Clement Industries plans a job fair June 11 at the Northwest Louisiana Technical College campus in Minden. The session will take place from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Clement Industries is expanding its workforce and plans to add 20 welder jobs.
