This is the way blue-collar America ends
The Atlantic
Take a close look at Rockwell Automation, and you'll understand why the modern manufacturing industry manages to be both a tremendous economic driver and a tough business in which to get a job. It's becoming standard for many manufacturing companies to require employees to have college degrees — and some jobs require a Ph.D. Factory-floor openings are scarce and often require specific credentials.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Welcome home: 'Made in USA' on the rise
CNBC via NBC News
With labor costs in China forecast to climb further, more small-business owners are benefiting from, or actively pursuing, domestic manufacturing rather than overseas options, sometimes called reshoring. And small shop manufacturers aren't just dusting off shuttered businesses, locked up after jobs moved to countries such as Japan in the 1970s. Young entrepreneurs are innovating from scratch, creating new online communities such as Maker's Row — and even turning to emerging platforms such as crowdfunding to bankroll U.S. manufacturing operations.

3-D printing helps Ford cut production time on some parts by 25 percent
Mashable
Companies are continuing to reap the benefits of 3-D printing, a decades-old technology that has increased in popularity over the past few years as the prices of printing machines and materials have come down. Ford uses the technology to print cylinder heads, brake rotors and rear axles for test vehicles. Thanks to 3-D printing, production time for one type of cylinder head, used in its fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines, is cut down from four to five months to three, shaving 25 percent to 40 percent off production time.

Today's blue-collar jobs require science, tech, engineering and math
Omaha World-Herald
A report by the Brookings Institution argues that while public policies designed to boost STEM careers focus almost entirely on four-year degrees, workers such as welders, machinists, registered nurses, auto mechanics and computer systems analysts are also STEM workers because they require significant knowledge in at least one of the four STEM fields.

Welding: A career worth pursuing
Engineering Capacity

Why manufacturing doesn't matter
Forbes
We all know the factors that have led to economic success in the industrial era: access to land, labor, raw materials, capital, machinery and — in many cases, anyway — a good idea. Today, all of those traditional advantages are falling away except one: the good idea. We are leaving the industrial era and entering the innovation economy, where manufacturing is a commodity and the idea trumps all.
