Companies consider demand versus costs of hiring
Worcester Telegram & Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
FIBA Technologies Inc., a gas containment supplier based in Millbury, Mass., has created 21 jobs in the past year, with growth of about 10 percent for the company. Like many companies, FIBA makes the decision to add a job cautiously, and only after it is confident there is long-term demand for its products or services. FIBA and other businesses worry, as they consider adding jobs, whether growing demand may be temporary and evaporate, leaving them with added expense. In this time of sluggish job growth, the FIBA experience opens a window on the reasons private companies create jobs. In Massachusetts, there are signs of a slow but steady economic recovery. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the New England unemployment rate has decreased by nearly 1 percent over the last year, a full percentage point below the national average, with strength in the manufacturing sector. Texas' Big Country companies hiring, paying healthy wages for welders
Abilene Reporter-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
These days it might be easy to confuse the noxious odor of a welder's fume plume — that pungent smell of smoke from molten metal — with the crisp, clean scent of new dollar bills. Welding jobs in the 19-county area surrounding Abilene, Texas, known as the Big Country, are in high demand and demanding high wages, fueled by increased oil field activity over the last few months. Area businesses are hiring, and schools are educating welders as quickly as a 2,800-degree Fahrenheit welding heat torch melts steel. Recently, 12 new welders graduated from the Fast-Track Welding program at Cisco College's Abilene campus, a seven-week course that teaches the uninitiated the basics of joining metal together with metal via burning gas. Technical training ramps up in Alabama's education systems
The Gadsden Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mike Rowe of the "Dirty Jobs" television show said it best in his promotion of "Go Build Alabama:" "A third of Alabama's skilled tradesmen are over 50, and they are retiring fast," Rowe said. "Yet, who's replacing them? No one." Awareness of a pending shortage of skilled workers began to grow about three years ago and led to the creation of private and public efforts to promote skilled trades and highly technical training as early as middle school. Unemployed today, welders may be hired tomorrow
NTV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Unemployed today and hired tomorrow — opportunity showers on those who need it the most as the unemployed get a shot at a new career. "It's been two and a half years for me since I've been able to find work," said Paul Harris. Now, Harris has employers lining up to talk to him about welding jobs, a career he hadn't even considered until a month ago. "Actually, I'm a carpenter by trade," he said. A church social worker told him to sign up for a four-week course at Nebraska's Central Community College. The $1,600-per-student cost was covered by a grant to help the unemployed. More

Moore said a Nebraska Workforce Development Synergy grant pays for unemployed and underemployed people to take a four-week basic welding class. He says the result hopefully will be a skilled worker in a good paying job. More
