BBC News
While the long decline of Detroit’s car manufacturing base has been well-documented, recently something strange has been happening in a place that was once called the "Paris of the Midwest." The Big Three car manufacturers — Ford, General Motors, and Chrysler — which have long called this area home, have recently stopped shrinking — and have even begun growing. Along with them, smaller manufacturers, from watchmakers to pickle companies, have sprung up.

Manufacturing, mining drag US industrial production

U.S. industrial production unexpectedly fell in May, likely as a strong dollar and energy spending cuts continued to weigh on manufacturing and mining output, bucking signs of an acceleration in the broader economy. Industrial output fell 0.2 percent after a revised 0.5 percent drop in April, the Federal Reserve said June 15.

Can Germany provide lessons for bolstering US manufacturing?
Automation World
David Greenfield writes, "It’s April and that means I must be at Hannover Fair in Germany — and I am. My nearly annual sojourn at this massive industrial trade fair always highlights for me the cultural, governmental and economic differences between Germany and the U.S. when it comes to manufacturing. Make no mistake, I am not kicking the U.S. manufacturing market, but few would argue that we, as a country, have consistently acted in the industry’s best interests over the last several decades."

Flooded with calls, Milwaukee college adds more extensive welding program
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Shortly after it was flooded with calls asking about free welding classes, Milwaukee Area Technical College says it's offering a more extensive program this fall — but it's not free. On June 9, college officials said they're offering the one-year diploma in welding at the Mequon campus for the first time. The classes also will be offered at the West Allis and Oak Creek campuses. Last month, the college was inundated with calls after it announced a free, two-month welding program that began May 26. Tuition and fees were covered under a Department of Labor grant for the program that, generally, was aimed at unemployed adults.
