Newly minted 'manufacturing communities' to share $1 billion

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker on July 9 announced the second set of 12 communities that have received designations under the Obama Administration’s Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership initiative. She announced the designees during remarks at the U.S. Manufacturing Summit at Wal-Mart’s headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas.

Skilled non-engineering labor still has shortages

The petrochemical industry, along with other areas of the oil and gas sector, is moving ahead, expanding and renovating. Any given year, the oil and gas industry spends at least $2 billion on projects, and it is projected they will spend $20 billion a year," said Jim Hanna, spokesperson, human resources, construction, fabrication and craft services for Fluor Corp. These projects spell jobs. Yet, there continues to be a scarcity of almost all skilled workers.

Going solar: Iowa governor visits welding industry
The Daily Gate
Steffensmeier Welding and Manufacturing Inc. owner Jenny Steffensmeier announced July 9 that the company is spending $923,000 to convert the entire operation to solar power. This makes Steffensmeier Welding the largest commercial operation in the state of Iowa to rely solely on the energy source. Joined by Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and members of Ideal Energy Solar, the Fairfield company that will take on the two-month-long project, Steffensmeier said the project will pay for itself in four to six years.

That has changed, especially for manufacturing jobs in Rochester, New Hampshire, said Mattson. As director of the Advanced Materials Manufacturing Program at Great Bay Community College, she said manufacturing has become a more refined industry and the demand for skilled individuals has increased.

Mobile, Alabama-based L&M Welding Supply acquired by Connecticut firm

Mobile-based L&M Welding Supply Inc. has been acquired by Tech Air, a Connecticut-based distributor of industrial, medical, and specialty gases and related welding supplies. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 1980 by Mike Kelly, L&M has grown to become a leading distributor of welding supplies and industrial equipment to the military, shipbuilding and power industries along the Gulf Coast.

Carter County Schools in Kentucky offering welding instruction for adults
The Independent Online
Continuing a successful foray into adult vocational education, Kentucky’s Carter County Schools will offer welding classes for adults later this summer. The class will prepare students for state certification and jobs in a high-demand profession, according to instructor Derek Hazlett. The 18-week class starts Aug. 17 at the Carter County Career and Technical Center in Olive Hill and will include both classroom instruction and hands-on welding training, according to Hazlett.

Piedmont Tech welding instructor destined to teach

Tony Amos was destined to become a welder. His heart led him to take up teaching. Amos grew up in Laurens County, South Carolina, graduating from Laurens District 55 High School in 1986 and joined the United States Marine Corps. He started as a diesel engine repairman and worked his way through the ranks to become an instructor.
