Third Annual National Manufacturing Day slated for Oct. 3
Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International
On Oct. 3, manufacturers, educational institutions and others will host events highlighting the importance of manufacturing to the nation's economy and draw attention to these high-skill jobs. Money to renovate Ivy Tech Princeton site

The Gibson County Redevelopment Commission has voted to put $600,000 into renovating Ivy Tech Community College's Princeton site in Gibson County, Indiana. The money comes from Gibson County's TIF fund and will be spread over a five-year period.

New study shows big demand for STEM skilled workers in scenic city

New research from the Brookings Institute shows without having a college degree but with the right skills in science, technology or engineering you are more likely to get hired in Chattanooga, Tennessee. At Chattanooga State Community College they say they are committed to STEM because so many of their graduates get employed straight out of college.

HCC Western Center welding program gets boost
The Hiawatha World
The new Highland Community College Western Center in Baileyville, Kansas, began offering coursework this summer and has recently received notice that they were awarded funding through a grant from the federal Perkins Reserve Fund to establish the Industrial Welding Program.

Shania Jamon licked her bottom lip, focused her eyes intently on the task before her, then set out to perform as perfect a weld as possible on a welding simulator computer recently at Central New Mexico Community College. With a few of her Van Buren Middle School classmates and an equal number of adult volunteers looking over her shoulder, the 12-year-old performed well, to say the least.

Students get firsthand look at Electric Boat manufacturing

Seventh- and eighth-graders recently got a firsthand look at how Electric Boat shipyard workers manufacture components for the nation's nuclear submarine force. The students, participants in a new program called the Young Manufacturers Academy coordinated by the Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board, wore yellow hardhats and green ear protection as they toured EB's mammoth machine shop, where robotic devices do much of the work.

Owatonna manufacturing plant to add 40 new jobs

An Owatonna, Minnesota, company is expanding and Gov. Mark Dayton was there to celebrate the new jobs that expansion will create in the area. Daikin Applied Manufacturing held a groundbreaking recently for its $9 million expansion project, which is expected to create 40 new jobs.

House approves 5 'Manufacturing Jobs for America' provisions

The House of Representatives approved legislation recently that includes five innovative skills-training provisions from the Senate's Manufacturing Jobs for America campaign. Sen. Chris Coons, who leads Manufacturing Jobs for America, applauded passage of the bipartisan, bicameral Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which will reauthorize, streamline and improve the nation's workforce training programs for the first time since 1998.

There's been a shift in U.S.' manufacturing industry, and MBAs may benefit from this change. Business school students who graduated in 2014 were more successful at receiving early job offers in manufacturing, as well as health care, than those going into more traditional industries such as finance or consulting, according a June report from the Graduate Management Admission Council.
