Nontraditional path leads woman to nontraditional job
The Sheridan Press
Amanda Craig, 28, never thought she would find herself working with metal, sparks and a flame. In fact, she never imagined that she would be working with equipment larger than herself. But as the only female student in the 2013 graduating welding technology class at Sheridan College in Wyoming, that is exactly where she wanted to be. "I had never even run a power tool before stepping into the Sheridan College Tech Center," Craig said. "The teachers were so nice and helpful, they make sure the atmosphere is positive and fun. I just had to give it my best effort every single day."

Boat lift buoys Minnesota manufacturer's fortunes
Star Tribune
The Swift Lift, a modular, portable lift for small boats and water bikes, has given a boost to inventor/entrepreneur Brian Varsoke’s contract-manufacturing company, Vanpro Inc. in Cambridge, Minn. The lift has everything he was looking for, but couldn’t find, in a lift and dock system, said Varsoke, who described it as lightweight, compact, easy to set up and adaptable to varying shorelines and water depths. The abrasion-resistant rails won’t damage hulls, he said, and the lift has no moving parts.

Commentary: Another energy choice — thorium
Barre Montpelier Times Argus
If we are serious about global warming, we should convert to Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors as our dominant energy source to replace petroleum. This would reduce carbon emissions to almost zero, allow us to drive, heat and produce electricity several times cheaper, and insure energy adequacy for thorium's 1,000 years of known U.S. reserves. It is good to speak out against the bad aspects of carbon, but even better that we promote a superior alternative — thorium.

US manufacturing turns positive in June
Los Angeles Times
After stumbling in the spring, the American manufacturing sector looks to be on stronger footing heading into the second half of this year. Industrial production rose 0.3 percent in June, in line with analysts' expectations, after falling by that much in April and no growth in May, the Federal Reserve said July 16. The recent increase reflected strong gains in automotive, home electronics and industrial machinery. That suggests improving demand from both consumers and businesses, although production of information-processing goods fell in June from the previous month.

Need a job? Learn to weld
Sarasota Herald-Tribune
As southwest Florida sheds the last vestiges of the Great Recession — with a resurgence in the manufacturing and the housing industries — a long slumbering problem affecting businesses is being felt once again. You have probably heard local homebuilders complaining that the skilled laborers needed to get their industry back to prerecession par are hard to find. So many left the construction business as Manatee and Sarasota counties sank into recession, it left a staggering mark: 8,500 fewer jobs than at the peak 23,000 during the building boom.

RIP peak oil theory?
By Lucy Wallwork
The recent closure of the famously "peakist" website The Oil Drum has been interpreted by some as the final whimper of an intellectual project that finds itself disproved amid today's unconventional energy boom across the U.S. and elsewhere. It looks like the "peak oil" theme has been put aside by Hollywood, but how far can we consign the theory to the dustbin?
