Connecticut rolls out program to create more manufacturing apprenticeships

Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy recently launched a new program to help boost Connecticut’s sagging manufacturing sector. The Manufacturing Innovation Fund Apprenticeship Program will pay eligible companies to bring in and train more apprentices. The program will cost $7.8 million for the first two years.

Double acquisition for Airgas as in deal involving Weldinghouse Inc. and Priority Energy Services

Airgas Inc. has acquired the assets and operations of Weldinghouse Inc. and its affiliates, effective July 17, and Priority Energy Services LLC, effective July 20. The Tier One company has now completed nine acquisitions since beginning its 2016 fiscal year on April 1, totaling approximately $74 million in aggregate acquired revenue.

Study: Elkhart County has one of the best manufacturing economies in the country

Elkhart County, Indian, has one of the fastest-growing manufacturing industries in the country. In 2014, the county ranked fourth in the nation for manufacturing job growth, with 3,194 new manufacturing jobs added, according to Headlight Data, a firm that aggregates and analyzes economic and workforce data released by the federal government. For this study, Headlight Data looked at data compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics through its Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages.

Newton (Kansas) High School welding technology instructor Mike McConnell now has that distinction. High-tech and manufacturing jobs on the rise in Montana
KTMF-TV
A new report from the Montana Manufacturing Extension Center at Montana State University shows manufacturing employment grew by 8.6 percent over the last five years in the state. There are over 3,200 manufacturing companies across the state, most of them being fabricated metal and food companies. Center director Paddy Fleming says manufacturing plays an enormous role in the state's economy.

Mississippi CC welding program makes use of virtual welding

One local community college has found a unique way to prepare the workforce. You will see helmets, gloves and simulated sparks. Welding instructor Anthony Hardin said the simulation program provides a safe learning environment for beginners. He said, "Hot metals aren't involved, sparks aren't involved, it's not in a shop environment, but a controlled environment."

DMACC works to draw in more students for advanced manufacturing careers

Students and potential students at Des Moines Area Community College’s Southridge Mall campus heard from a variety of advocates for advanced manufacturing jobs on July 24. DMACC hosted the event in conjunction with the American Welding Society, the Iowa Advanced Manufacturing Consortium, Home Base Iowa, and the Iowa Association of Business and Industry to provide attendants information on welding as a career in high-demand in Iowa.

Welding nets school boost in Tennesee
The News-Herald
Loudon County (Tennessee) Schools officials were recently awarded a $100,000 Carl Perkins Reserve Grant, which will be put toward the purchase of equipment for a new welding vocational course to begin in January at Loudon County Technology Center. Tom Hankinson, career and technical education coordinator for Loudon County Schools, said word came in late June that the school system will get the grant.
