Jobless claims fall, manufacturing orders rise
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A pair of better-than-expected economic reports in the U.S. added to the breath of relief on Wall Street after Europe's top central banker pledged to do whatever is necessary to preserve the euro. The Labor Department said that initial jobless claims sharply fell, and the Commerce Department reported that new orders for longer-lasting manufactured goods rose at a healthy rate in June. More

A $100,000 factory job: What's uncool about that?
CNNMoney via Yahoo Finance    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What's uncool about a $100,000 factory job? These days not much. In fact, factory jobs — once considered back-breaking and low-paying — have become high-tech and high-salaried. Still, young people don't get it, say factory owners, who can't find enough skilled workers. "When I was an apprentice in the late '70s, kids were dying to get into manufacturing. There were plenty of factory jobs," said Joe Sedlak, a machinist who owns the Chesapeake Machine Company in Baltimore. "There are jobs for the taking today. But kids don't want them." More

Manufacturing's keystone: Skilled labor
The Inquirer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Lately, there has been plenty of talk about how the Marcellus Shale, and natural-gas production in the U.S. in general, is boosting the U.S. economy and creating jobs. What is being overlooked, however, is the secondary — and perhaps longer-lasting — impact of natural-gas production in Pennsylvania: the potential for a substantial increase in base manufacturing and port activity in the Philadelphia region. Opinion: Manufacturing, energy go hand-in-hand
The Commercial Appeal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
To read and listen to some influential economists and media pundits, you would think that U.S. manufacturing is collapsing and that our nation's economy is becoming entirely "service-based." In fact, U.S. manufacturing is leading the overall economy with greater overall growth, including growth in employment, and a large part of the reason is the power of innovative technology to create productivity. The Federal Reserve's latest monthly report shows that America's industrial sector is continuing to grow. Overall industrial output rose 0.4 percent in June on a monthly basis and by 4.7 percent on an annual basis, marking the 29th consecutive month of annual growth. More

Tough job, great pay: Welders badly needed in Tulsa, Okla., area
KRMG    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While unemployment continues to make national headlines, millions of jobs in America go unfilled because of a lack of trained personnel. Recently, KRMG's Clark Howard spoke to the issue, saying "it is absolutely a terrible thing for the country that we have not been able to play this "match game" effectively, getting people with the right skill set for the jobs that go begging." In the Tulsa, Okla., area, welding is an industry that badly needs trained people. More

Economist: Keep on manufacturing, Marion County, Ohio
The Marion Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Playing to its strengths serves a county well, Marion County being no exception, a central Ohio economist said. "I think a real point to bear in mind is that it's critically important that the leadership of Marion County understand their strengths, understand what you have that other parts of the region, other parts of the state, other parts of the country do not have," said Bill LaFayette, owner of Regionomics, a Columbus, Ohio-based economic and workforce strategy firm. Japan factory output in unexpected fall in June
IndustryWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Stoking concerns that turmoil overseas is damaging a recovery in the world's third-largest economy, Japan's factory output turned down unexpectedly last month, official data showed. The output decline came amid growing fears about the fiscal situation in Europe — a major market for Japanese products — and a strong yen hurting demand for products from the nation's factories. Industrial production in June edged down 0.1 percent from the previous month, said the ministry of economy, trade and industry — smaller than a revised 3.4 percent fall in May but well short of market expectations for a 1.6 percent rise. Iowa career tip: Welding a hot job
Public News Service    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Year after year, the demand for trained welders grows but the supply dwindles as veteran welders retire. And educators are having a tough time keeping up, with a waiting list at Des Moines Area Community College. DMACC Welding Department Chair Mike Rahn says many learning the trade already have jobs. "A lot of them are already working before they've even finished the program. Employers work with our students just to get them on board. They'll let them go to school a half day, work a half a day." Toyota regains top global auto sales spot from GM, with VW in pursuit
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Toyota Motor Corp regained the lead in global car sales over General Motors Co in the first half, with Volkswagen AG poised to move past GM and push the U.S. automaker into third place for the full year. The bigger question is how soon the German auto giant also will pass Toyota and secure the global sales crown — an internal goal that VW management has targeted for 2018 as part of the company's so-called Strategie 18. Welding education returning to FMHS
Fort Madison Daily Democrat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Fort Madison High School Principal Greg Smith knows there's a great need for students with vocational and technical education, and after being limited in those types of classes at FMHS for years, the district is focusing on bringing them back, beginning with welding. The Iowa school has gone for several years without any welding, machining, electrical, or mechanical classes other than carpentry, auto, and basic home electricity. The welding program is being considered a stepping stone to creating a valuable and necessary skilled trades program based on math, science and technology at Fort Madison Community School District's high school level. Portland barge, railcar manufacturer picks up steam
Daily Journal of Commerce    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a massive warehouse at the 58-acre Gunderson plant on the Willamette River, sledgehammers thundered, welding torches hissed with neon sparks and warning bells screamed. Building barges is noisy. "It's not so much the loud noise," said Jason Joy, administrative assistant for Mark Eitzen, Gunderson's vice president and general manager, as he navigated a gauntlet of machines, wires and forklifts. "It's the constant noise." For nearly a century, Gunderson, part of the Lake Oswego, Ore.-based Greenbrier Cos., has been building tools for industrial transportation. In 1919, it was wire wheels. Today, it's railroad cars and 17,000-ton capacity barges. More
