Heat Treatment Conference
AWS
Aug. 12-13, 2014
Dallas
Sheraton Arlington Hotel

The thermal effects from welding and heat treatment influence the microstructure and mechanical properties of welds. Various materials, such as carbon steels and other alloy grades, are affected by heat treatment which changes the weld metallurgy and influences the final welded product. Better understanding of the impact of welding and heat treatment practices can allow for the weld quality and reliability to be optimized for the application.

What it takes to get a good manufacturing job now
Yahoo Finance
We build things in America again. But not just anything. The U.S. manufacturing sector, once a vast network of assembly lines churning out every imaginable product, has evolved into a specialized and highly efficient industry focused on goods that can’t be built cheaper or better someplace else. There are good jobs in manufacturing — the kind able to finance a comfortable middle-class lifestyle. But there are far fewer than there used to be, and many workers who might have been qualified to man an assembly line 25 years ago lack the skills manufacturers require today.

Advanced manufacturing expertise key to future
Forbes
Nationally, manufacturing comprises about 12 percent of U.S. gross domestic product. Major cities across the country make up that total, naturally, and HSBC released a new report July 30 shows how Chicago is one of those cities, with manufacturing making up 90 percent of the state’s total exports, totaling $63 billion in 2012. Those are big numbers — ones that translate into real growth — where new revenues mean new jobs. The report found that each manufacturing job accounts for a spinoff of another 2.2 jobs, adding about 800,000 more jobs at locally based suppliers and in business services.

UCLA flood: Crews begin welding ruptured pipe
Los Angeles Times
Repair crews were able to completely shut off the flow of water July 30 to a ruptured main line near UCLA, clearing the way for workers to begin welding new pipe after an estimated 20 million gallons of water flooded the area. A Department of Water and Power official told reporters that the flow was finally stemmed and that crews would continue working around the clock to repair the 93-year-old high-pressure line that flooded the school and created a huge sinkhole on busy Sunset Boulevard.
