Ultrasonic welding used for Cadillac ELR's battery packs
HybridCars.com
How well the batteries of an EV are assembled and built are keys to the reliability of any electric vehicle. With this in mind, General Motors chose ultrasonic welding, a high-tech manufacturing process used in the aerospace and medical industries, to help ensure high quality for the batteries of the new Cadillac ELR extended-range electric luxury coupe that goes on sale in North America in early 2014. Ultrasonic welding's key advantage is exceptional and predictable quality and performance from one battery pack to the next.

NRC rules on using and distributing uranium, thorium; regulations take effect Aug. 27
Nuclear Regulatory Commission
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is amending its regulations for products and materials containing unenriched uranium and thorium, also known as source material. The changes include new requirements for distributing source material and licensing its use. Manufacturers and importers of products that can be used without a license — such as welding rods and gas lantern mantles that contain thorium, and decorative glassware containing uranium — will now need to apply to the NRC for specific licenses to distribute these products. Such licenses will impose new requirements for labeling, quality control, reporting and recordkeeping.

Has US manufacturing's comeback stalled?
Stateline via USA Today
Everywhere you look, there is buzz about U.S. manufacturing's comeback, including in the high-tech sector. Motorola Mobility, owned by Google, is hiring 2,000 workers to produce its new Moto X phone in Fort Worth, Texas. It will be the first smartphone assembled in the United States. Apple Inc. has promised to invest $100 million to build a Mac product line to be assembled in Texas, using components made in Illinois and Florida and equipment built in Kentucky and Michigan. These activities raise important questions: Are expectations that U.S. manufacturing is poised for a "renaissance" unfounded and has the U.S. manufacturing comeback already peaked?

Taking the patent war to the trolls
IndustryWeek
In 1895, an inventor named George Selden obtained a patent that provided him with sole rights to a new technology called the "gasoline-engine-powered carriage." Until Henry Ford successfully challenged his claim in 1911, Selden was able to use that patent to cobble a healthy income as the world's only authorized producer of automobiles. And he did so without making a single car. Instead, he made his living by selling licenses to the technology and threatening any violators with company-crushing lawsuits. Today, in a more technologically advanced world, a similar problem exists.

Kevin Brown welds imagination to iron
Gumbo Entertainment Guide
If you're in the Houma, La., area, you might have noticed the heron sculpture at the beginning of the Bayou Boardwalk near Barrow Street. In that case, you're familiar with Kevin Brown's ability to manipulate iron. But such representational art is merely one side of the sculptor's talent. Brown has a playful side to his creativity that, at times, borders on the fantastic but also shows diversity in his appreciation for animals and the female form. Antelope busts with twisted antlers, iron chairs with wavy or vertebrae-inspired seatbacks, cubist-inspired iron female depiction and iron sculptures featuring animal skulls are all creations that began with simple ideas in his imagination.

China reports increase in manufacturing
The New York Times
A manufacturing index recently published by the Chinese authorities provided an unexpectedly solid reading for July but did little to dispel the picture of an economy that is cooling more rapidly than many analysts had expected just months ago. The reading, published by the National Bureau of Statistics, edged up slightly, to 50.3 from 50.1 in June, indicating that recent small-scale economic support measures announced by the authorities in Beijing might be aiding some parts of the economy.

Can manufacturing push past uncertainty?
IndustryWeek
The path to prosperity has been littered with economic obstacles in 2013, but economists expect growth to pick up soon and U.S. manufacturers to benefit from a changing energy picture. The slow return of jobs has generated considerable debate about what constitutes a U.S. manufacturing "renaissance." Chris Kuehl, managing director of Armada Corporate Intelligence, says industry will never again provide jobs for "the high school graduate who doesn't want to go on to college." But he said manufacturing has reversed 30 years of decline in its contribution to U.S. GDP and remains a world leader in producing sophisticated, high-value goods.

How seriously should we be taking the concept of unburnable carbon?
By Lucy Wallwork
Reserve levels and reserve-replacement metrics have long been used as key determinants of the value of firms in the hydrocarbon industry. But new reports cast doubt on the boldness of valuing assets in the ground that may never be extracted and burned if global governments take seriously their commitments to limiting carbon dioxide emissions. This leads to concerns over a potential "carbon bubble," in the mold of the dot-com bubble or the global financial crisis, all stemming from the overvaluing of corporate assets.
