PG&E workers say safety warnings ignored
San Jose Mercury News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
PG&E repeatedly ignored safety concerns raised by its employees in the years before the deadly San Bruno, Calif., explosion and the workers were sometimes punished for speaking up, according to lawsuits against the utility and interviews with the workers. James Redeker, whose job was to look for fraud and other misconduct as the company's manager of investigations, said he was laid off when he complained about "potentially explosive gas leaks" and falsified records. Steve Segale, a gas crew welding foreman, believes he lost out on lucrative overtime because he complained about the same problems. More

Welding wonkery: How the DiPietro/Osgood cage is made
The Associated Press via Lighthouse Hockey    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hockey fans who play in recreation leagues and eagerly devour new equipment with each new RBK advertising blitz might think the cage Rick DiPietro used when he returned from a facial fracture this year is something you can just pick up off the shelf, in the vintage section. Not so. Not only did Bauer stop making those Chris Osgood-style cages several years ago, but forging a custom replacement that's strong enough to stop NHL pucks is no amateur shop task. "The full face cages that Osgood and DiPietro wore may look like the vintage Cooper model, but they're nearly nine times stronger than anything out there," says Sean Code of Olympia Composites, one of the few shops that still knows how to do it. "The cages are a special kind of stainless steel, thicker wire, TIG welded by hand, and hardened with a patented process to make them 8.5 times stronger than a regular cage," Code says. More

Last federal helium reserve near Amarillo, Texas, is running out
Fort Worth Star-Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Deep beneath the dry, dusty ground outside this Panhandle city lies something lighter than air: helium. But the supply of the gas that inflates balloons, cools MRI machines and detects leaks in NASA space shuttle fuel tanks isn't infinite. There's only so much helium in the world, and some fear that a shortage is coming. "Once it's used up, it's gone," said Rasika Dias, professor and chairman of the chemistry and biochemistry department at the University of Texas at Arlington. "What we have is what we have." More
