NRC rules on using and distributing uranium, thorium; regulations take effect Aug. 27
Nuclear Regulatory Commission
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is amending its regulations for products and materials containing unenriched uranium and thorium, also known as source material. The changes include new requirements for distributing source material and licensing its use. Manufacturers and importers of products that can be used without a license — such as welding rods and gas lantern mantles that contain thorium, and decorative glassware containing uranium — will now need to apply to the NRC for specific licenses to distribute these products. Such licenses will impose new requirements for labeling, quality control, reporting and recordkeeping.

Repurposed welding robot can forge any painting it's shown
Geek.com
It takes years of practice and intense concentration to master the art of painting, or if you're a welding robot, just some really good programming. In a studio at the University of Konztanz in Germany, just such a robot is dabbing its brush in paint as it works. The robot is called e-David, and it can reproduce any work of art it's shown. A welding robot is actually a good choice for a makeshift artist. These robot arms have three degrees of freedom in order to precisely aim a torch at bits of metal. It can just as easily be programmed to point a paintbrush at canvases as an arc welder at car doors.

RIP Nabucco: What the Southern Corridor gas route decision means for the US
By Lucy Wallwork
The Nabucco pipeline, a highly political piece of gas transportation infrastructure, was designed to carry natural gas from Azerbaijani gas fields and neighboring suppliers to gas-hungry European customers. That was the logistical agenda, at least. The political agenda was to reroute the movement of gas to avoid Russian territory. So given all of this is happening far from U.S. soil — and the U.S. on the road to energy independence — why do we still have so much at stake in the squabbles over the details of the Southern Corridor route?
