US nuclear plant shuts down, as it can't compete with natural gas

A 40-year-old nuclear plant in Vermont will shut down next year due to the high costs of competing with cheap natural gas, the company said Aug. 27. Entergy Corp. said the Vermont Yankee plant, which employed some 600 people and was licensed to operate until 2032, will be decommissioned after its current fuel cycle ends.

US Rep. Daines visits Great Falls College welding program
KRTV-TV
Twenty new welding stations at Great Falls College-Montana State University are helping train more students to go after high-paying jobs in the energy industry. With the new stations, the program will be able to handle 120 students, up from the current 40. The new equipment is due to a $1.4 million dollar grant back in June. Rep. Steve Daines, R-Mont., visited the campus on Aug. 28 to discuss the growth of the certification program.

Mon Valley Career Center in Pennsylvania offering welding certificate

With growth in the natural gas and oil fields, the need for pipe welders continues to expand. Hoping to prepare candidates for advanced training in that field, Community College of Allegheny County, Pa., is partnering with the Mon Valley Career and Technology Center to create a certificate program. The 18-credit welding certificate course will be taught at the career and technology center in Speers, said Justin Tatar, assistant dean at CCAC Washington County Center, located in the Washington Crown Center Mall.

Report: Baton Rouge, La., needs more skilled workers

The Baton Rouge, La., area is one of five major U.S. manufacturing centers experiencing a severe or significant shortage of skilled workers, according to a report by The Boston Consulting Group. With about $60 billion in industrial expansions underway or planned in Louisiana, much of that in the industrial corridor along the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge to New Orleans and around Lake Charles, officials here have estimated the state has a need for an additional 86,300 skilled craft workers by 2016.

Butte College welding grad pleased with program

Veronica Shaeffer, 20, began welding when she was a freshman in high school and continued taking welding classes at Butte College in Butte Valley, Calif., where she graduated from the welding technology program last spring. "I took freshman welding in high school," Shaeffer said. "I ended up really loving it." The welding program at Butte College is a two-semester program that accepts 50 students at the beginning of each fall semester. The program is a vocational core of courses to prepare students for certified welding jobs.

Alabama community college opens new welding facility

The sound of grinders and welding torches filled Wallace Community College's new welding lab in Dothan, Ala., Aug. 27, but the usual haze of smoke and dust associated with welding was absent. The new $1.7 million welding lab’s design provides a more open atmosphere and new ventilation technology helps keep the air clear.

Texas job training program adjusts amid funding cuts

A grant program in Texas that focuses on training students in fields like nursing and computer support is undergoing funding cuts as a result of legislation passed during the state Legislature’s regular session. Two of the Jobs and Education for Texans program’s three funds will downsize this fall — one awarding grants to nonprofit organizations for training low-income students, the other funding scholarships to students in career and technical education programs.

Report: Unsafe welding led to fatal Gulf accident
The Associated Press via Star Telegram
A recent report by a consultant for a Texas-based company after a deadly 2012 explosion off the Gulf of Mexico blamed unsafe welding practices for the incident. A subcontractor used the workers whose welding was faulted. The report was released the same day a $180 million lawsuit was filed in connection with the accident.

Midwest manufacturing pace picks up in August

Pennsylvania's share of Marcellus Shale jobs dips

Pennsylvanians made up a smaller share of new workers in the local shale gas industry in 2012, according to industry data released on Aug. 28, underscoring a shift from drilling to pipeline work. State residents accounted for 56.8 percent of new hires among drillers, pipeline companies and contractors in the Marcellus Shale Coalition. That's down from 72 percent the year prior, according to annual surveys the group does of its workforce.

Manufacturing jobs to grow fastest in outstate Minnesota

Free training for manufacturing jobs at Kentucky Career Center

While the Louisville, Ky., area unemployment rate remains around 8 percent, some manufacturing jobs go begging. But there is a program in Louisville designed to train workers to get such jobs. Detrick Trotter is one of about a dozen people enrolled in a four-week class to become a certified production technician at the Kentucky Career Center at the Airport Industrial Center in South Louisville. He hopes to land a manufacturing job after completing his training.
