The US may have more manufacturing jobs than we think
The Washington Post
The United States lost 6 million manufacturing jobs between 2000 and 2009. At least, that's the official count from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But could the official count be missing something? In a new paper, two economists point out that nowadays there are lots of companies in the United States that aren't counted as manufacturing by the government but are still heavily involved in the manufacturing of goods.

'So You're the New Welding Engineer' conference comes to FABTECH
AWS
How to get “up to speed” quickly. How to ask the right questions. How to get the results you need, save money, and stay out of trouble! This two-day conference from Nov. 18-19 is for managers, engineers, designers, and others with welding responsibility but limited exposure to or background in welding. The conference focuses on arc welding applications, but the principles have universal applicability. Presentations and discussion are based on the “Application Analysis Worksheet,” which was developed to teach a senior college course to engineers about to enter industry, with the objective of helping them develop a path to understand and deal with the challenges they were about to face.

3 reasons why US manufacturing is on the rise
The Week
August was a good month for factories. The U.S. manufacturing sector grew at a faster rate over the last month than at any other time during the last two years, not that the U.S. economy has made up the millions of manufacturing jobs it hemorrhaged over the last two decades. Still, factories reported to financial firm Markit "that demand often exceeded production." And the overall boost in manufacturing over the last two months has some economists hopeful that the country is headed for recovery. What is responsible for this increase? Here are three reasons.

In light of Wal-Mart summit, is the revival of US manufacturing a reality?
Forbes
Ever since overseas factories in countries such as China and Vietnam emerged as America's primary sourcing arm, churning out everything from toasters to tank tops, wistful calls for the return of U.S. manufacturing have sounded a note of well-meaning naïveté. But something funny happened after Wal-Mart's recent U.S. manufacturing summit in Orlando, Fla. Suddenly, the notion of a real "made-in-the-USA" revival doesn't seem so naïve anymore.

Building a trained, highly skilled workforce is a priority in Arkansas. The state has already proven to have a strong educational system as it placed fifth nationally in the 2012 Quality Counts analysis by Education Week. That ranking was the result of an umbrella program called Arkansas Works, which had its roots in the Governor's Summit on Education and Economic Development, held in 2008. It is the state's strategic initiative to coordinate education, training and economic development in Arkansas communities as a way of ensuring that the state provides a highly qualified and educated workforce for the future.

Reproducible copper welding
Industrial Laser Solutions
A prerequisite for laser material processing of copper is direct interaction between the focused laser radiation and the copper surface that requires part of the radiation to be absorbed at the surface. As an illustration in this article shows, for a polished copper surface at room temperature, less than 5 percent of the laser radiation is absorbed. Despite this, there are a range of measures that can be taken to allow copper to be welded successfully and efficiently, particularly with solid-state or fiber lasers.

South Korea nuclear issues, tower protests raise blackout risks
Reuters
South Korea faces possible power blackouts this winter and next summer, as cable safety issues and protests that are holding up completion of an ultrahigh-voltage power line threaten to keep more nuclear reactors offline. Asia's fourth-largest economy generates a third of its electricity using nuclear power, primarily to replace oil and gas, for which South Korea relies almost entirely on imports. But six of its 23 reactors are offline, including three shut since May to replace cables supplied with forged safety certificates. In addition, another reactor will soon be closed to check the welding on a steam generator.

Commentary: 'Making it' in Newark, NJ — the future of manufacturing
The Star-Ledger
The popularity of the Discovery Channel's "How It's Made" reflects America's long-standing fascination with cutting-edge processes, state-of-the-art machines, and the shiny, new objects they together produce. It's not for nothing that, despite years of offshoring and outsourcing, the United States remains the world's largest maker and biggest consumer of manufactured goods. Nevertheless, for decades Americans have held an incongruous belief that U.S. manufacturing is dying or dead, and that the nation's manufacturing jobs largely involve rote assembly-line work in dirty, unsafe factories. This problematic disconnect between perception and reality is readily apparent in Newark, N.J.
