American Welding Society Supports Workforce Development Goals of Manufacturing Day
AWS
Facing a shortage of over 374,000 welders by 2024, the American Welding Society (AWS) is focused on strengthening the future of the welding industry and is a proud sponsor of Manufacturing Day on October 2, 2015.

Welding is essential for the joining of materials in the major manufacturing industries and as the manufacturing industry in the U.S. continues to grow, so does the need for skilled welders. Through continued learning and advanced training, AWS strives to inspire a new generation to see the opportunities available in the welding industry.

18th Annual Aluminum Conference — Last Chance to Register
AWS
Sept. 22-24, 2015
Omni Hotel
San Diego, CA

A distinguished panel of aluminum-industry experts will survey the state of the art in aluminum welding technology and practice. The 18th Aluminum Welding Conference will also provide several opportunities for you to network informally with speakers and other participants, and to visit an exhibition showcasing products and services available to the aluminum welding industry. Aluminum lends itself to a wide variety of industrial applications because of its light weight, high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and other attributes. However, because its chemical and physical properties are different from those of steel, welding of aluminum requires special processes, techniques, and expertise.

Robotic Welding Competition
AWS
Nov. 9-12, 2015
McCormick Place
Chicago, IL

Contestants have the chance to prove their robotic welding prowess in a two-part competition which includes a hands-on practical test and a written examination. Both portions are timed, with the practical exam requiring a thorough knowledge of the art of robot programming, safety, and weld inspection. The practical portion will be judged based on speed, accuracy, and quality of the completed weld.

For the first time this year, contestants will also be divided into two separate classes: amateur and professional. The amateur class will include students or potential students in the robotic arc welding field, while the professional class is reserved for people already employed in a robotic welding field.

Welding process begins for next Orion spacecraft
Aerospace Manufacturing and Design
Lockheed Martin and NASA engineers have successfully welded the Orion spacecraft’s tunnel and forward bulkhead together. The tunnel is the passageway astronauts crawl in and out of when Orion is docked with another vehicle. The forward bulkhead, located at the top of the crew module, must handle extreme loads during re-entry, because that is where the parachutes are connected when they deploy.

Amid a shortage of welders, some prisons offer training
NPR
America needs more welders — and soon. Baby boomers with the skill are retiring and not enough young people are replacing them. In the '80s, when "Flashdance" brought us Alex the welding woman who really wanted to be a ballet dancer, America had well over half a million welders. Welding was hot. Today, there are about 40 percent fewer welders.

Etsy will now help designers find manufacturers
The Verge
Six months after Etsy completed an IPO that valued it at $3.5 billion, the craft marketplace is expanding. The company is introducing Etsy Manufacturing, a new service that will link Etsy sellers — who often make items by hand — with small manufacturing companies. The operation is designed to help both sellers who've found success but have little time to fulfill larger orders, and smaller manufacturers, some of whom have lost business to huge manufacturers in countries where labor is cheaper.

Manufacturers rebounding through efficiencies without adding workers or raising pay
The Columbus Dispatch
In a meeting room near the factory floor, workers have a puzzle to solve. The employees, dressed in fireproof coveralls and yellow or orange vests, gather around a map of their department at the Worthington Industries steel plant on the Far North Side of Columbus, Ohio. They have a stack of yellow cards representing the steel rolls that workers load and unload all day. The challenge: Find ways to remodel the department to allow room for more rolls and to move the rolls more efficiently. This is part of a weeklong study that employees are doing in addition to their regular duties.
