US industrial output up in August as manufacturing rebounds
Reuters via CNBC
U.S. industrial production rose in August as a bounce back in motor vehicle assembly lifted manufacturing output, a hopeful sign for the economy after growth got off to a slow start in the third quarter. Industrial output increased 0.4 percent last month after being flat in July, the Federal Reserve said on Sept. 16. The rise was in line with economists' expectations.

How to get “up to speed” quickly. How to ask the right questions. How to get the results you need, save money, and stay out of trouble! This two-day conference from Nov. 18-19 is for managers, engineers, designers, and others with welding responsibility but limited exposure to or background in welding. The conference focuses on arc welding applications, but the principles have universal applicability. Presentations and discussion are based on the “Application Analysis Worksheet,” which was developed to teach a senior college course to engineers about to enter industry, with the objective of helping them develop a path to understand and deal with the challenges they were about to face.

In NASCAR, where there's a weld, there's a way
Yahoo Sports
NASCAR race cars require hundreds of welds — and every single one of them has to be perfect. At 200 mph and around every corner, race cars are pushed to the very limits. They have to be strong for safety, but light for performance. The cars built at Stewart-Haas Racing are no exception. Back at the shop, master fabricators such as Daniel Smith spend hours making sure every weld is just right. For Smith, simply put, it's his passion.

The rebalancing of the world's manufacturing sector
The Wall Street Journal
The wage gap between China and the U.S. is shrinking rapidly, and the one-way flow of manufacturing jobs to China has started to turn. But, cautions Jeffrey Joerres, the chief executive of temporary-staffing company ManpowerGroup: "It's not a gold rush." His point is that American companies that have offshored jobs to China aren't about to bring them all back. Factories built in China will stay in China to serve the local market. However, there are now compelling reasons to invest more in manufacturing in the U.S., he says.

Bridging the skills gap: Best practices for finding, keeping and
growing talent

IndustryWeek
A shortage of trained, educated workers is forcing the manufacturing industry to change how it finds and retains talent. A survey of manufacturing executives by the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte ranked access to a highly skilled, flexible workforce as the most important factor in their success. Against these challenges, manufacturing companies need new ways to build and retain not only qualified engineers and welders, but positions that involve the day-to-day use of their products, such as maintenance technicians.

Welding job market hot nationwide, cool in eastern Kentucky
WYMT-TV
Students learning to weld in Hazard, Ky., know they may have to look elsewhere for the jobs they are training for. "You don't really want to stay around here," said Hazard Community and Technical College student Casey Tarver. "As far as making a lot of money goes, you probably want to leave eastern Kentucky," he said. Where there is construction and infrastructure, however, chances are, there are welding jobs, said welding instructor Randy Bowling.
