Boston Business Journal via The Republican    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Manufacturing has a future in Massachusetts, but the state's leaders will have to step up their game if they want to ensure that future is a bright one. A new report recently released by The Boston Foundation and Northeastern University's Dukakis Center paints a picture of a vibrant, healthy manufacturing sector where employment has stabilized since the Great Recession. Roughly two-thirds of manufacturers say they expect to grow their workforce in the next five years and roughly half of those plan to grow employment by more than 10 percent. But many manufacturers also expect some challenges when it comes to recruiting the right people to fill those jobs. More

Now in his second year of Bill Anthony's welding class at the CDC in Longmont, Colo., Melton said that after he graduates from Niwot High he hopes to land an apprenticeship as a welder. While enrollment in traditional four-year colleges and universities continues to increase, so do tuition costs. A growing number of young people seem to be choosing to learn a trade while they're still in high school or shortly after rather than pursuing a traditional four-year degree. More

Statoil performs new subsea flowline remote-control hot tap procedure
Offshore    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Norwegian company Statoil has conducted a subsea pipeline hot tap operation in a record manner at Asgard in the North Sea. For the first time ever, remote-controlled equipment and a subsea welding robot have installed a new tie-in on a live gas line with no other preparation. The tie-in was welded onto the Asgard B production flowline in 265 meters (879 feet) of water using Technip's Scandi Arctic vessel. The project consisted of a robot welding a T-piece on to the pipe while gas continued to flow. Then, a remote-controlled drilling machine put holes in the producing pipeline with no effect on pressure and production. The method was developed by Statoil from work begun in 1999. More
