GM claims 'breakthrough' will make vehicles lighter, help gas mileage

General Motors plans to accelerate the replacement of steel with aluminum after researchers achieved what the company described as a "breakthrough" in welding technology. GM hopes the technological advancement will boost fuel economy by making its vehicles lighter. Aluminum is lighter than steel, making it an enticing alternative when it is not too expensive. But several hurdles remain for aluminum, including production challenges. GM believes it has solved one of those challenges: the frustrating process of welding aluminum body panels. More



US manufacturers get boost from overseas customers

A few years ago, Signature Systems Group, which makes portable flooring and fencing products, had $10 million in annual sales and only sold its products in the U.S. Now, more than half of the Bronx, N.Y., company's customers are overseas, annual sales have reached $70 million and the company has quadrupled its work force. The Boston Consulting Group estimated last year that as many as 3 million new American jobs would be created by 2020. Now, it's bumped that number to as many as 5 million jobs. For the first time since the 1930s, U.S. manufacturers have an advantage in exports. More

HSBC survey: China manufacturing shrinks for 11th month

Manufacturing in China contracted for the 11th month in a row in September, according to a private sector survey of factory managers that indicated the world's second-largest economy remains on track for a seventh quarter of slowing growth. The HSBC Flash China manufacturing purchasing managers' index showed activity stabilized in September after hitting a nine-month low in August, with the headline reading ticking up to 47.8 from 47.6 last month. The Welding Program at North Idaho College offered its services for free to create and form any metal work the NIC community may need. The projects are built by NIC students in the welding program so that they can get a sense of what it is like in the real world to meet quality controls, issues and time constraints. "It's very beneficial for students," said John Campbell, one of the students who worked on one of last year's welding projects. The numbers of submissions that will be accepted are limited. More

Toyota drops plan for widespread sales of electric car

Toyota Motor Corp has scrapped plans for widespread sales of a new all-electric minicar, saying it had misread the market and the ability of still-emerging battery technology to meet consumer demands. Toyota, which already had taken a more conservative view of the market for battery-powered cars than rivals General Motors Co. and Nissan Motor Co., said it would sell only about 100 battery-powered eQ vehicles in the United States and Japan in an extremely limited release. Many people don't know about Midwest Industrial Trade School, located in Stockton, Ill. President Chad Eshelman opened the business in September 2011, hoping to provide students with the opportunity to learn a unique trade and help them find jobs. "We specialize in pipe welding," Eshelman said. "There is a big demand right now. I have clients calling regularly wanting welders. It's a specialized trade." The school strives to provide accessible, quality educational programs and services which anticipate and respond to personal and community needs and expectations. More

Mahindra opening engineering center near Detroit

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., the Indian utility vehicle and farm equipment maker, announced that it will open a technical center near Detroit to supply engineering services to the U.S. car industry. Rajan Wadhera, Mahindra's chief executive for automotive technology and product development, said its new technical center in Troy, Mich., run by Mahindra Engineering Services, is the group's first such center outside India. Company officials said they hope to have about 100 employees within the next six to eight months. More

Innovative Harper College manufacturing program spreading across Illinois

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded $12.9 million in federal funding to expand Harper College's new Advanced Manufacturing program to schools across Illinois, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said. The Palatine community college, in collaboration with regional manufacturers, launched its Advanced Manufacturing program this semester to help replenish the pipeline of skilled workers. A recent Manufacturing Institute report found that U.S. companies can’t fill an estimated 600,000 positions in the advanced manufacturing sector. More

A $3.1 million project is expected to spark growth in the welding technology program at Central Community College's Columbus campus. The college's board of governors authorized the 9,405-square-foot addition to the campus' North Education Building last month. The expansion project, which must be approved by Nebraska's Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education and again by the board of governors before officially moving forward, will address this problem by adding a wing to the north side of the North Education Building dedicated specifically to the welding program. More

Pensacola State College gets $2 million for welding project

Pensacola State College is part of a five-college consortium that's being awarded a $10 million federal grant for a mobile welding and manufacturing technology project. Each school will share a portion of the money, which comes through a U.S. Department of Labor's Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant. PSC's portion for the three-year project totals more than $2 million, according to a PSC news release. More

America's booming natural gas production has drawn countless manufacturers back to the United States, experts said at Shale Gas Insight 2012. Low natural gas prices have lingered due to the glut of the commodity, making the country an attractive market for manufacturers once again.
