Chicago index increases in sign US manufacturing is improving

Business activity in the U.S. expanded more than forecast in September, reaching a four-month high and adding to signs of a rebound in manufacturing that will help underpin the world's biggest economy. The MNI Chicago Report business barometer rose to 55.7 from 53 in August. Numbers greater than 50 signal expansion. The median forecast of economists in a Bloomberg survey was 54.

Ohio welding institute gets $5 million slice of innovation funding pool for research project

Turns out Edison Welding Institute will benefit from new national innovation funding after all. The Columbus, Ohio-based materials joining research center was passed over last summer as the pilot home for the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation institutes. But recently, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, announced that Edison Welding would lead a $5 million research project on additive manufacturing through that Youngstown center.

Robotic welding program brings Wisconsin governor to technical college

Learning to weld is normally a hands-on experience, but 14 students at Wisconsin's Fox Valley Technical College are taking a very hands-off approach to a new course. Fox Valley Tech has introduced a course in robotic welding at its Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center on Oshkosh's south side this semester as it responds to changing demands of area manufacturers. The new program, and the eight robots mounted with mig welding guns, caught the attention of Gov. Scott Walker, who toured the manufacturing campus one recent afternoon.

Houston, we have a welder shortage

The Houston area needs welders. Demand far outstrips supply, thanks to the continuing strength of the oil and gas industry as well as the large number of skilled workers reaching retirement age. Houstonians looking to enter the field have multiple opportunities for employment and for the education needed to obtain it. "Houston is definitely the hub. More welders are needed here than anywhere else," said Tom Tynan, program director for the construction and trades department at Houston Community College.

Welding class is hot pick at Northern California high school

No project is too big for Manuel Avila and his students. Avila heads the agriculture department at Buhach Colony High School in Atwater, Calif., and teaches ag welding technology and equipment fabrication classes for beginning and advanced students. Avila's students have built a 20-ton fertilizer spreader for a Chowchilla farm, a 28-foot ring roller used in plowing fields, a custom trailer to tow an antique tractor, and several large barbecue grills.

John Deere donates welding equipment to Iowa high school

John Deere Ottumwa (Iowa) Works recently made a substantial donation to Ottumwa High School's welding program. The contribution comes as a result of an externship experience Evans Middle School shop teacher Brandon Brooks completed over the summer at John Deere. He spent 30 days working 40 hours a week, learning new ways to make engineering relevant in the classroom.
