Manufacturing aids Louisville, Kentucky, economy
The Courier-Journal
The practice of manufacturing goods for sale has been part of life in Louisville, Kentucky, for nearly 200 years. By the 1830s, our city’s workers were building steamboats. In 1912, Ford opened a factory at Third and Breckinridge that turned out a dozen Model T’s a day. These days, the global manufacturing sector is undergoing a transformation as dramatic as anything we’ve seen since the industrial revolution. In the midst of these changes, Louisville still remains a leader in this crucial sector of the economy. Forbes has named our city one of "America’s New Manufacturing Boomtowns."

Between 2012 and 2020, approximately 90 percent of the growth in the world’s electricity consumption will occur in emerging markets. By 2020, two-thirds of global energy consumption will be located in these same regions. Such a drastic growth of energy demand in these areas could spell trouble for the long-term viability of our globe. Within this risk, however, lies great opportunity.
