Learning real-world welding
Assembly Magazine
Letters matter to welders. A, B and C, for example, are grades that employers use to determine a welder’s current ability, work assignments and pay scale. Also important are the letters AWS, which stand for the American Welding Society. The organization offers a wide range of certificates to welders who pass specified tests. Because OEM and tier 1 customers increasingly require their products be welded exclusively by AWS-certified welders, those with this certification have an advantage over fellow workers and job seekers. William Maxfield and Eric Coleman learned the importance of AWS certification as welding students at different Ivy Tech Community College campuses in Indiana.

So You're the New Welding Engineer
AWS
How to get "up to speed" quickly. How to ask the right questions. How to get the results you need, save money, and stay out of trouble! This two-day conference from Nov. 18-19 at FABTECH is for managers, engineers, designers, and others with welding responsibility but limited exposure to or background in welding. The conference focuses on arc welding applications, but the principles have universal applicability. Presentations and discussion are based on the "Application Analysis Worksheet," which was developed to teach a senior college course to engineers about to enter industry, with the objective of helping them develop a path to understand and deal with the challenges they were about to face.

Manufacturing Day shows industry no longer involves dirty,
back-breaking work

The Times of Northwest Indiana
Bring up manufacturing, and it might conjure mental images of shuttered factories or grimy, soot-smudged workers filing out of mill after a long shift. But manufacturers across the country hope to get people to see the industry for what it is: a still-vibrant and increasingly high-tech field in need of more skilled workers. Oct. 4 was the second annual Manufacturing Day and also the fifth annual Steel Day, which were both nationwide events aimed at changing public perception.

'Mini-renaissance' in manufacturing helps fuel demand for skilled workers
The Boston Globe
Mike Cox was laid off last year from his longtime job as a pressman at a printing company near Worcester, Mass. Lacking a college degree and up-to-date manufacturing skills, he prepared himself for protracted unemployment. Then he was accepted into an intense eight-week training course for operating computerized manufacturing equipment known as "computer numerical control," or CNC. Not long after completing the program, Cox landed a job at Phillips Precision Inc., a maker of plastic and metal products for food service, medical device, electronics, and other area firms.

Industrial Laser Solutions
General Motors' $131 million investment in technology at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant, which includes the first production use of a GM-patented process, allowing aluminum to be spot-welded to aluminum and laser welding of aluminum panels, is resulting in the strongest and most precisely built Corvette in its six-decade history. To show off the Corvette and its plant, public tours at the plant will resume on Oct. 14. The plant tour and customer programs were halted last fall while the plant underwent the upgrade. The sports car has been built there exclusively since June 1981.

Rochester Arc & Flame, college spark careers
Democrat & Chronicle
Class is in session, and it is deafening. Separated from instructors and observers by curtains of thick plastic at the Rochester Arc & Flame Center in Gates, N.Y., students at individual workstations practice techniques of grinding and welding metal pipes while wide sprays of sparks careen off their work like water from lawn sprinklers. "I've always liked working with my hands," said one of the students in the pipe welding class, Eric Eccleston, 38, of Rochester. "I love taking things apart, seeing how they work."

Working around the skills gap: Southern Minnesota manufacturers look for strong employees
St. Peter Herald
Studies show that the demand for skilled workers is growing throughout Minnesota — especially in rural areas and small towns where manufacturing is an integral part of the local economy. But stiff competition for those workers and the impending retirement of thousands of baby boomers, could short-circuit the manufacturing industry's ability to grow, according to an August report released by the St. Peter, Minn.-based Center for Rural Policy and Development. And that could mean bad news for what the center's executive director, Brad Finstad, says could be considered the cornerstone of outstate Minnesota's economy.

The importance of metal fabrication management
Manufacturing.net
Successful metal fabrication companies are always on a mission to improve their lead times to cut down on operating costs and to increase customer satisfaction. Many managers may try to analyze what the company does or doesn’t need, or which of the available suppliers might be cheaper and faster, yet provide them with their company’s specific needs without sacrificing quality in their products. As with any business, a metal fabrication company is only as efficient as its management.
