Skilled workers should expect higher salaries next year
Fox Business
The prolonged weak labor market and unstable economic recovery has meant stagnant wages for many workers, but there might be a light at the end of the tunnel for some employees. Certain professions will see an increase in salaries next year, according to a new report by staffing company Robert Half International. Workers with specialized areas of expertise like accounting and finance or information technology can expect higher salaries next year because the unemployment rate for highly skilled workers remains low.

Reuters
The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits recently fell less than expected, but a lingering backlog of applications in California makes it difficult to get a good read of labor market conditions. While other data on Oct. 24 showed manufacturing growing at its slowest pace in a year in early October, economists said fundamentals for the factory sector remained fairly healthy.

Watch molten steel run through a 19th-century welding workshop
Gizmodo
A few weeks ago, a tiny gallery in London was transformed into a scene straight out of the 19th century. Amid piles of sand, a worker donned a silver apron and safety helmet and poured molten hot steel down a track to create long slabs of metal. The man in the apron was Raphael Hefti — not an industrial worker, but an artist. The process Hefti used is called thermic welding, and it was invented in the late 1800s to weld together train tracks in the field.

Modeling processes depend on your application
R&D Magazine
The modeling and simulation of various manufacturing processes is important because, in many cases, it’s impractical or even impossible to measure the specific operating parameters involved that contribute to the resulting products. This is particularly true in high-temperature processes like blast furnaces or the welding of large metal structures such as those used in shipbuilding and reactor vessels. Trial and error has been the traditional methodology used to create critical high-temperature processes in the past, which has been inexact at best, and could be potentially dangerous to manufacturing personnel in the worst cases.
