Now hiring: North Dakota oil boom creates thousands of jobs

Those hurt hard by the ailing economy are flocking to Williston, N.D., where an oil boom has turned a sleepy prairie town into a place producing thousands of jobs. "There's opportunity here and that's what we all need is opportunity," said Williston Mayor Ward Koeser. "It's kind of been an oasis for the country. You know, there's a lot of jobs here, good paying jobs in the oil industry." More

Nancy C. Cole got a second chance at life 32 years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. At the time, in 1979, she was a busy wife and mother of two boys who was building a career in a field dominated by men. The diagnosis was not totally unexpected — her family had a strong history of breast cancer — but it hit hard. "At that time, it was often a death sentence," she said. "We were scared." Since then Cole, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., says she tries not to waste a moment. More



Analysis: Ohio among Top 10 manufacturing states

Ohio is among the Top 10 states in the country in reliance on the manufacturing industry for its economy. An analysis from The Business Journals On Numbers of new federal data indicates that 16.74 percent of Ohio's gross state product is generated by manufacturing. That adds up to $79.9 billion annually for Ohio, out of a total state GSP of $477.7 billion, and ranking it 10th in the nation based on the percentage. Ohio was fifth in the nation for total size of manufacturing in dollars. More

    Health concerns cause Washington state college to close welding class

    KEPR-TV Channel 19 has learned that Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Wash., suddenly shut down its welding classrooms because of health concerns. The school was worried about airborne chemicals after students reported bloody noses and sickness related to a chemical leak. Tests found nothing over the safe levels, but just in case CBC is adding new hoods to better ventilate the room. More

    Renault announces plant slowdowns, cites falling demand

    In the face of falling demand, Renault announced a series of plant slowdowns later this month. The company's plant in the northern city of Douai, France, where it makes the Scenic compact MPV, was to close from Oct. 26 to Nov. 1, a company spokesman said. Other sites were to close from Oct. 29 to Nov.1. More

    Ohio's Lincoln Electric reports strong increase in sales, profits for 3rd quarter

    Lincoln Electric's efforts to increase its commercial markets around the world are paying off with an enormous surge in sales and especially its profit. The Euclid, Ohio-based global maker of welding equipment and welding supplies reported net income of $55.5 million, or 66 cents per share, for the three months that ended Sept. 30. That's a 71 percent increase from the $32.5 million income, or 38 cents per share, the company reported for the third quarter of 2010. More

    Wisconsin welding shop owner adds bait and tackle to business

    Keith Syring was fishing near the Schofield Dam when he first saw the welding shop in Schofield, Wis. "I thought that would be the perfect place for a bait shop," he said. Syring bought the building and now, nearly 16 years later, he finally has his bait shop. He has recently added bait and tackle to the welding services and canoe and kayak rental he already offers at Vintage Welding and Repair and Riverside Canoe Rental. More

    Georgia WWII vet served as 'Dorothy the Welder' in Marines

    Cpl. Dorothy Turner, United States Marine Corps, retired, was one of the few, the proud, the lady Marines of World War II. Raised in Illinois, Turner mastered many male-dominated skills as a young woman, such as plumbing, welding and riveting. After she joined up against her father’s permission, she was sent to Camp Lejeune. She spent the war doing what she already knew how to do — plumbing, welding and riveting. Turner died Oct. 22 in Conyers, Ga. She was 88. More
