AWS announces 2015 Seminar schedule
AWS
The American Welding Society has released the 2015 AWS Certification Seminar schedule. The AWS Certification Department gave its first certification exam in October 1976. The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) was the first industry-recognized certification that ensured high quality workmanship in welding. The success and prestige of this certification opened the doors for AWS to develop several more certifications benefiting the industry.

AWS conference: 'So You're the New Welding Engineer' | Nov. 11-12, Atlanta
AWS
Every one of us who is designing, planning, developing or supervising a welding operation is working with people whose knowledge of welding is limited. Some have seen serious and costly errors made in manufacturing when "common knowledge" was not known by key people. With this in mind, the AWS Conference Committee has created a conference just for you! Join us during FABTECH 2014 in Atlanta for "So You're the New Welding Engineer" on Nov. 11 and 12 at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Additive Manufacturing Conference | Nov. 13, Atlanta
FABTECH
Additive manufacturing represents the realization of the ideal of "on-demand manufacturing." Without molds or dies, additive manufacturing enables production of parts and prototypes on demand. Design improvements can be made and tested rapidly without tooling and machining constraints.

Come and learn from the experts about additive manufacturing processes such as powder bed fusion, material extrusion, directed energy deposition, material jetting and more.

Unable to fill welding jobs, Loadcraft looks to Mexico
Brownwood Bulletin
Loadcraft Industries is Texas bred and American made, the company's chief operating officer, Reece McIver, recently told Brownwood (Texas) City Council members. But that declaration hasn't enabled Loadcraft to meet its demand for welders because of competition from the Texas oil boom, McIver said, and Loadcraft, with some help from the Brownwood City Council, is looking to Mexico as a temporary solution.

Manufacturers scramble to fill jobs and recruit women
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel via The Detroit News
Manufacturers are having trouble finding people in welding and other skilled trades as a wave of older workers retires and younger people aren't stepping up to take their place. They say women represent manufacturing's largest pool of untapped talent but that it's difficult to sell them on the careers. Less than 10 percent of young women placed manufacturing among the top five occupations they felt offered the most opportunity for them, according to a recent survey from the organization Women in Manufacturing and the consulting firm Plante Moran Inc.

Welding student receives gift from anonymous donor
WCYB-TV
VideoBriefA local college student received a gift that will help him with his lifelong ambition — but he doesn't know who gave it to him. His instructors and classmates think the gift was well deserved. Bradley Ledford graduates from the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in May. Bradley still couldn't believe it when someone left a pretty big gift for him at school. Ledford started taking classes at the TCAT in Elizabethton, Tennessee, to be an electrician, but he realized there might be a better fit for him, which led him to welding. Bradley is deaf, and Carol Harmon is his interpreter at the college.

US manufacturing renaissance proves elusive despite cheap gas
Reuters
According to many commentators, cheap natural gas is producing a renaissance in U.S. manufacturing and putting European competitors at a disadvantage. But empirical studies show the impact has been small and concentrated in a handful of energy-intensive industries that account for only a small share of manufacturing value-added. Cheap gas has produced big benefits for most energy-intensive industries but for the rest of the U.S. manufacturing sector the impact has been modest.
