Manufacturers added 19,000 workers in October, the most since February
Shopfloor
Manufacturers added 19,000 net new workers in October, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This was the largest monthly gain since February and an improvement over September's upwardly revised 4,000 additional employees. August and September jobs data were both revised higher from earlier estimates, each by 2,000 workers. While the October jobs number was definitely better than recent figures, it is still clear that hiring growth for the sector has been disappointingly slow.

More veterans fill the skills gap at US manufacturing plants
CNBC
As a sailor in the U.S. Navy for 29 years, Dave Collins traveled to the far corners of the earth in a submarine: Africa, the Arctic and the southernmost points of South America. When he retired from the military in August, Collins briefly considered the same careers many fellow veterans pursued, including the Defense Department and law enforcement. But after three decades in and on the water, Collins was hungry for a new challenge. He found it on the work floors of America's manufacturing plants.

Build a manufacturing app, save the US economy
VentureBeat
In Silicon Valley, the home of Facebook, Google and other rapidly growing tech companies, it is easy to get lost in the tech space and forget the other important core industries such as infrastructure and manufacturing. Living in the Valley, Arnav Anand has observed that the fast pace of innovation and adoption by tech-sector enthusiasts has created a situation, at least within the maturing apps industry. Further innovation in the consumer space is now difficult to find. These phenomenal entrepreneurs often overlook the large number of critical problems in the IT-enabled manufacturing space wherein their contribution would be highly valuable in creating substantial economic value for the sector and society as a whole.

Wisconsin Gov. Walker touts manufacturing during Sheboygan visit
The Oshkosh Northwestern
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker recently urged local and state leaders to find new ways to recruit more people into manufacturing careers. Too many manufacturing jobs continue to go unfilled as factories are unable to find workers with the proper skills, Walker said, which can keep companies from taking on new business. While the state’s technical schools and middle schools and high schools have stepped up efforts in recent years to address the state’s skilled-labor shortage, Walker said more needs to be done to promote manufacturing as a career choice.

Eurozone demand boosts German manufacturing
The Wall Street Journal
Strong demand for capital goods from the eurozone helped German manufacturing orders rebound sharply in September, as the region's timid economic upswing fueled demand for ships, rail and aviation equipment. But other eurozone data recently published indicate that the bloc's recovery remains fragile, which will increase pressure on the European Central Bank to take further steps to boost the region's economy, steering it away from low inflation and prolonged stagnation.
