FABTECH, the largest metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing event in North America, recently announced that its show in Chicago set records for numbers of attendees and exhibitors as well as for floor space. A total of 40,667 attendees visited 1,573 exhibitors to see live equipment demonstrations, compare products side by side to find cost-saving solutions at product displays spread across 650,000 square feet of exhibits at McCormick Place.

AWS and RWMA issue call for papers on advances in resistance welding

The American Welding Society and Resistance Welding Manufacturing Alliance is now accepting papers for its first-ever International Symposium on Advances in Resistance Welding to be held on April 28-30, 2014, in Atlanta, Ga. Industry researchers, engineers, scientists, and academics involved in various resistance welding fields from all over the world are invited to present and publish high-quality technical papers. Papers will be selected for technical quality, appropriateness and significance.

The American Welding Society (AWS) and Germany's Gesellschaft für Schwitechnik International (GSI) have partnered to deliver a unique conference where U.S. and European welding standards on numerous topics will be presented, compared, and discussed. This conference will benefit engineers, inspectors, supervisors, and quality control personnel who are familiar with one set of standards. Among the topics to be discussed are welding standards covering structural fabrication, pressure vessels, railway vehicles, and company certification. The format of the conference will be one expert presentation on the U.S. standards followed by an expert presentation on the comparable European standards for each topic. There will be open discussion allotted for each topic period.

Industry group: US faces substantial decline in the dollar

Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation recently released a report, arguing that that within the international financial system, currency manipulation and commensurate mercantilist policies are having a serious adverse impact on U.S. trade and threaten the long-standing dollarized financial system. In the report, "Twilight of the Dollar With Technology-Intensive Manufacturing at Center Stage," Ernie Preeg, senior advisor for international trade and finance, MAPI, finds that the United States faces a dollar twilight dilemma that will result in a substantial decline in the dollar and the phasing down and out of the dollarized financial system of the past seven decades.

IPhone-maker Foxconn to invest millions in Pennsylvania

Foxconn Technology Group, the Taiwan-based maker of Apple Inc.'s iPhone, plans to invest $40 million in Pennsylvania to develop robotics, joining other manufacturers seeking to build products in the U.S. Foxconn flagship company Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. will invest $30 million over two years to build a high-tech manufacturing facility for goods including components for telecommunications equipment and Internet servers, said Terry Gou, the billionaire chairman of Foxconn.

Welding class teams up with businesses to make Christmas tree stands
The Alpena News
Hillman (Mich.) High School career and technical education welding students have been working on a fabrication project making Christmas tree stands in conjunction with Moran Iron Works Inc. and Horrock's Farm Market. The stands are built for large trees that are displayed in facilities such as shopping malls, churches and public buildings. Moran Iron Works was an essential part in the program, with owner Tom Moran supplying many of the materials needed for the project, and allowing the students into his shop to prepare some of the parts needed for the stands.

Training grants to strengthen Davidson County, N.C.'s workforce are available through the North Carolina Incumbent Workforce Development Program on a biannual basis. IWDP is a competitive, retention solutions grant that businesses can use to address employees' skills gaps in order to increase a company's regional and global competiveness. "This grant exists to train your existing workforce, whether that's an administrative assistant that needs more proficiency in (Microsoft) Excel, or a welder that needs their AWS (American Welding Society) certification," said Tim Maness, business and industry manager for DavidsonWorks.

Butterfly sculpture welded into place after multiple thefts

The butterfly sculpture outside the Women's and Children's Alliance in Boise, Idaho, is back in its place after a series of thefts stretching back more than two years. Boise Rigging Supply recently welded the colorful little creature to its perch, after it was stolen a third time, and then returned. WCA leaders hope the welding job is a permanent fix.

Ford expansion receives $1 million backing

A $101 million proposed expansion at Ford Motor Co. in Woodlawn, N.Y., is among seven area developments in multiple fields to receive funding approved by the Western New York Power Proceeds Allocation Board. Ford is to receive $1 million — just under half the total amount OK'd by the board — for a modernization of the Buffalo Stamping Plant. The automaker has not yet released details on the project but the board said funding would be used for workforce training tied to new technologies.

Motorized zoom lens and vision system assist in underwater
welding project

Vision Systems Design
In order to improve the deep-sea welding capability of its systems, a manufacturer of remotely operated vehicles utilized a miniature motorized zoom lens from Resolve Optics for its video camera. The company, which is not named in the case study, develops ROV systems which can perform underwater welding functions to secure the integrity of pipes and other marine structures. With ROVs, a task that was previously carried out by divers is replaced with a machine, providing a safer option.

Kansas City Fed sees an improved outlook for manufacturing jobs

Manufacturing activity rose slightly in November in a seven-state region that includes Kansas and part of Missouri. Companies signaled that a hiring pickup may be coming. Data released by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City showed a reading of 7 on its manufacturing composite index for November, up from 6 in October and 2 in September. The index measures production, new orders, employment, supplier delivery time and raw material inventories.

Boeing picks 15 potential sites nationwide to build 777X

Boeing has asked 15 locations around the United States to submit formal bids for the work of building its forthcoming 777X jet, according to a person close to the discussions. Boeing spokesman Doug Alder recently confirmed that a formal request for proposals was sent out to "more than a dozen" sites.

Lincoln Electric's dual acquisitions

Manufacturer and reseller of welding and cutting products, Lincoln Electric Holdings Inc., announced that it has acquired an ownership interest in Burlington Automation Corporation and agreed to buy Robolution GmbH. Financial terms of the twin transactions were not disclosed. Ontario, Canada-based Burlington Automation, a maker of 3-D robotic plasma cutting systems, serves the structural steel, construction, oil and gas and general fabrication markets in North America.
