Flexible fixturing for robotic welding
Assembly Magazine
Jigs are often used to position parts for welding on an automated assembly line. However, a big challenge for many manufacturers today is mixed-model production. Maintaining jigs for every welded assembly can be expensive. Moreover, each time the assembly changes, the fixture must be changed, too, and that adds cycle time. Now, there's an alternative: a robot equipped with an adaptive gripper. The gripper can grab any part regardless of size or shape, position it on the assembly and hold it tight during welding.

Foxconn sends a manufacturing message with new Pennsylvania plant
The Brookings Institution
Recently, international electronics mega-manufacturer Foxconn announced plans to invest $30 million in a new robotics plant in Harrisburg, Pa. Foxconn, the notorious Chinese low-wage manufacturer of Apple's iPhone, has become the poster child of U.S. outsourcing in the face of ruinous global labor cost competition. The calculus of manufacturing supremacy is seemingly simple: Low labor costs and taxes, proximity to a large consumer base, and manageable corruption levels equal a sure strategy to attract global firms. So what's going on in Harrisburg?

Group 1 body shops prep for the age of aluminum
Automotive News

Group 1, the nation's fifth-largest dealership group, wants all of its 28 body shops to be certified to do aluminum repairs by Jan. 6. Carmakers are using more aluminum to lower vehicle weight and raise fuel economy. Because aluminum's metallurgical characteristics differ from steel's, dealership collision departments will need to invest in more training for technicians and in new welding, riveting and metal bending equipment.

From shop class to shipyard: Oregon's plan for industrial interns

Manufacturers in Oregon want to hire high school students. But they don't want the kinds of high school students that colleges are after — the kind who have amazing test scores and will spend hours perfecting essays. They want teenagers who want to paint, weld and work with their hands. The hope is that those teens will turn into enthusiastic workers in an industry where the current workforce is headed toward retirement.
