The Vindicator
It was their children who helped push four women to enroll into welding and machinery in the Adult Education program at Mahoning County (Ohio) Career and Technical Center. For Kathleen Clarke, she was unsure about enrolling in the machinery program after 25 years in the floral-design field. She said one of her sons told her, "You can make metal roses." The three women in the welding program all spoke fondly of their kids, too.

Welding narrows the skills gap in Wisconsin: Local jobs for local students
Price County Review
As the baby boomer generation begins to retire and the working population in many Wisconsin counties fades, demand for skilled workers is expected to rise, and that’s especially true in the north. According to a report by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance earlier this year, Price County is expected to see a 41 percent drop in the number of working-age residents over the next 30 years. Furthermore, the number of school-age children in the county is expected to drop by more than 30 percent from now until 2040.

At Oregon's Sherwood High School, girls-only class teaches welding, woodworking, computer skills
The Oregonian
Nationwide, at most 3 percent of trades workers are women. But in a Sherwood High School welding, computer technology and woodshop class, it's completely the opposite. Every student is female. "Imagine, Design & Build It — No Boyz Allowed" easily filled to capacity this fall, as it has every year since the course debuted in 2009. That first year, teachers hoped 60 girls would sign up, according to woods and construction teacher Jon Dickover. Instead about 120 expressed interest. The school doesn't advertise or promote the course, called NBA by students and staff; its popularity has come just from word of mouth.
