3-D printing with metal: Engineers create DIY welding 3-D printer for under $1,500
International Business Times
Currently, the commercial 3-D printing landscape is dominated by contraptions that create everything from toys to watchbands out of plastic. But there’s another manufacturing revolution in the making: metal 3-D printing. Big companies like Rolls-Royce and General Electric are already working on using 3-D printing, but their machines have a startup cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now, engineers from Michigan Technological University in Houghton have rigged up their version of a 3-D metal printer that can be made with less than $1,500 of materials and some open-source software.

Students get crash course in shale industry
The Philadelphia Inquirer
On their first day working on a drilling rig in November, eight students looked like the rank novices they were: They wore clean gloves and tidy safety vests, and many didn't know the difference between a roustabout and a tool pusher. But three weeks later, the students at Penn College of Technology's course on drill-rig components had accumulated the grease-smudged experience that they hope will be their ticket to a job in the Marcellus Shale natural gas industry.

In Taiwan, export figures show impact of offshore manufacturing
The Wall Street Journal
Taiwan's exports have long been considered a bellwether of global demand due to the island’s prominence in the electronics supply chain. But the recent divergence in export-related indicators has left some investors puzzled. Export orders, a harbinger of actual exports a month or two down the line, have been rising modestly since July, in a range of 0.5 to 3.2 percent. That trend is in sync with purchasing managers indexes that have shown manufacturing growing for four straight months and which rose in November at their fastest pace since March 2012.

US energy boom helps grease manufacturing's spinning wheels
CNBC
The U.S. manufacturing renaissance may have an invisible hand guiding it along: the energy sector, which is in the midst of its own breakneck expansion. The heavily chronicled shale boom that has propelled U.S. oil production to historical peaks also may be greasing the wheels of manufacturing, which suffered for years as production moved to cheaper havens overseas. Now, however, the once-beleaguered sector is expanding briskly. Recently, the Institute for Supply Management reported that manufacturing activity expanded at its fastest pace in 30 months in November.
