Unions, companies look to expand apprenticeships for airmen
Air Force Times
Twelve miles south of the gates of Joint Base Lewis McChord, separating troops are planning for their future in a cloud of welding sparks. The United Association's Veterans in Piping program, headquartered in a concrete concert building in an industrial park south of the sprawling Air Force and Army installation, selects a group of 18 separating service members for an intensive, 16-week program to get them certified in welding and pipefitting and set them up with jobs. The program is part of a new push to hire the wave of veterans leaving military service.

More women needed in manufacturing jobs

Manufacturing companies are looking for more women to fill their jobs. Federal statistics show women make up nearly half of the U.S. workforce, but hold less than a third of the nation's 12 million manufacturing jobs. Companies like Milwaukee's Harley Davidson are targeting women through job fairs, professional organizations and schools. Welders, in particular, are in high demand in Wisconsin.

Virginia Gov. McAuliffe announces money for welding, other certifications in Hampton Roads

Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Dec. 11 that seven Virginia Community Colleges will be able to receive a total of $500,000 to help students get credentialed. In particular, Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton will receive money for students who receive an American Welding Society certification. The Federal Workforce Investment Act funding will go toward noncredit, intensive training with industry support, according to a news release. The money will only be paid to students who complete credentials that are identified as regionally high-demand sectors.

President Obama launches competitions for new Manufacturing Innovation Hubs and American apprenticeship grants
The White House
On Dec. 11, at a meeting of the President’s Export Council, President Obama announced nearly $400 million to help improve the competitiveness of American businesses and workers by spurring new manufacturing innovations and giving America workers additional opportunities to improve and expand their skill sets for middle-class jobs. To help support new advancements in manufacturing, the president will announce more than $290 million in public-private investment for two new Manufacturing Innovation Hub Competitions.

PwC study increases projected shale benefits to manufacturers

The shale gas boom keeps getting louder. The projected benefits of the "shale effect" to manufacturers have increased considerably since 2011, according to a new forecast issued today by PricewaterhouseCoopers. In the report, PwC estimates that the ongoing surge in shale gas production could bring annual cost savings of $22.3 billion by 2030, assuming a high natural gas recovery and low-price scenario.

13 Arizona districts offer vocational alternative to traditional high schools

Matthew Capota glanced over at his group as three teenagers picked up pieces of an airplane engine on a table and turned them over in their hands. Capota, a senior at Liberty High School in Glendale, Arizona, and fellow students make sure the engine would work properly and safely. "David, inspect it for cracks, corrosion or anything unairworthy," Capota said. Capota is one of 33 students in the aviation program at Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC), one of the 13 joint technical education districts in Arizona.

Twenty-five years ago Rob and Pam Kreikemeier started R.K Aerials in Fremont, Nebraska, with three employees in a 5,000-square-foot facility. Over the years the company has grown to employ 80 people working in a 40,000-square-foot facility. GM plans $3.6 billion expansion of Mexico operations

U.S. auto giant General Motors will invest $3.6 billion over four years to expand and modernize four plants in Mexico, the company said Dec. 11. With this investment, GM will have spent $5 billion in Mexico between 2013 and 2018, generating 5,600 direct and 40,000 indirect jobs, said the company's chief in Mexico, Ernesto Mariano Hernandez. "It is a ratification of the commitment of General Motors in Mexico," Hernandez said at an event alongside Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Marshfield, Oregon, welders embark on Washed Ashore jellyfish project
The World
Two giant jellyfish are forming on the bottom floor of Marshfield (Oregon) High. It's Washed Ashore's newest project, partnering with the Pirate welding students to create two steel structures which will transform into jellyfish for the nonprofit. Once the students' job is done, the jellyfish will be loaded with marine debris and plastic — another installation in Angela Haseltine Pozzi's art which aims to raise awareness and educate the public about ocean pollution.

It's a good thing Dennis Heimerman didn’t leave welding and never look back like he planned. "I left with the intention of leaving it for good because I knew at the time there was a lot of smoke in these shops, and it wasn’t a healthy place to be," he said. So, Heimerman left welding — something he had done since he was 17 years old, to sell cars — work at area factories and pick up a job at NAPA Auto Parts in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota.
