Artisanal manufacturing: Creating jobs to produce things in America again
Forbes
Forbes' Bruce Upbin writes of American manufacturing, "What we need is a new type of company — called an artisanal manufacturer — based on principles that promote economic prosperity, enliven local communities, and offer customers a rewarding experience based on quality and value. The first phase of artisanal manufacturing has typically been very small scale, localized and expensive. Today a new type of artisanal manufacturer is on the verge of carving out a meaningful place in the market, offering broader access to a level of quality that can’t be achieved by traditional mass-scale businesses."

Springfield, Mass.' A.G. Miller continues proud century-old tradition of metal fabricating, but needs help getting trained staff
The Republican
When A.G. Milller started in the metal fabrication business in Springfield, Mass., nearly 100 years ago, its customers were automobile manufacturers Knox and Stevens-Duryea. Today, the precision high end of metal fabricating is building enclosures for submarines and chassis frames for equipment that analyses blood and DNA in medical labs, parts for the manufacturing of computer chips, alternative energy fuel cells and hydroelectric plants. Tolerances get as small as 5 one-thousandths of an inch. But A.G. Miller is having trouble trying to find qualified employees and is relying on a grant program through the Regional Employment Board of Hampden County.

Preloaded ultrasonic unit saves time in automation
Design World
Compact ultrasonic actuators with low weight can be easily mounted on robot arms and are thus well suited for fast and low-energy joining of plastic parts. Preloading the pneumatic cylinder of the actuator saves time — up to 1 second per weld spot. This is particularly noticeable in applications with many weld spots. Preloading means that the cylinder has already been extended via an intelligent pneumatic system when the weld tool gets in contact with the material.
