The Chrysler Group is preparing for a large expansion of its central Indiana operations that a researcher said would likely boost other companies in the area. Chrysler officials have outlined plans to potentially add 400 jobs at three existing transmissions factories in Kokomo, Ind., while also starting up a new plant at nearby Tipton with perhaps 850 workers. Farm-equipment plant to open in Central Texas, aims for 50 jobs

Welding sparks started wildfire in Washington

The Department of Natural Resources has concluded that an August wildfire that caused $11 million damage was caused by sparks from welding or cutting work on a bridge southeast of Cle Elum, Wash. The department released the results of its investigation into the Taylor Bridge Fire that destroyed 61 homes and blackened 36 square miles. More

Students say Bill Schefer's two-year welding program provides them a hands-on education in a field where demand is high for quality, skilled workers. Some said they hope their training will help them to one day get jobs at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, or Westinghouse Electric Co. in Newington, and while not all of the students will go on to careers in welding, they said it is a skill that will stay with them.
