Last federal helium reserve near Amarillo, Texas, is running out
Fort Worth Star-Telegram    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From Aug. 9: Deep beneath the dry, dusty ground outside this Panhandle city lies something lighter than air: helium. There's only so much helium in the world, and some fear that a shortage is coming. "Once it's used up, it's gone," said Rasika Dias, professor and chairman of the chemistry and biochemistry department at the University of Texas at Arlington. "What we have is what we have." More

The Wall Street Journal (Subscription)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From July 26: In this age of do-it-yourself culture, or at least a lot of DIY television shows and magazines, we like to think of ourselves as handy enough with tools to install wallboard, apply joint compound and paint, and even tackle a few plumbing and electrical jobs. But Jeep wants to know: How's your welding? The car maker is offering customers a kit with all the parts needed to turn their Jeep Wrangler Unlimited four door SUVs into two door pickup trucks. The kit was inspired by a show truck called the JK-8 Independence that recalls earlier Jeeps like the CJ-8 Scrambler of the 1980s and J-8 military pickups. More

Stinger Welding, a fabricator of steel bridge components, has 43 employees in Libby. It began work on a 105,000 square foot fabrication plant in 2009, but the project was put on hold because of financial challenges. "They are not hiring unskilled people and trying to train them. They already have welding backgrounds, but because of the global economy, they have to be familiar, for example, with not only American Welding Society standards but also European and Canadian standards."
