W Hotel reveals 'rebellious underground' in New Orleans French Quarter
W French Quarter will unveil a new image this summer, inspired by New Orleans as it transforms the look of its 97 guestrooms, living room, restaurant and bar. The first phase of the guestroom redesign has already been completed. For the redesigned guestrooms, two design concepts were used, said to have been inspired by the jazz and the mystery of tarot. Each room will boast a palate of clean lines and modern blacks and whites, mixed with gold tones and primary colors.
Karl Lagerfeld to makeover Monaco's Hotel Metropole
The fashion world's most prolific multitasker, designer Karl Lagerfeld, is branching out in to the world of luxury hotels. Having cut his teeth with a suite made from chocolate for ice cream giant Magnum, the Chanel creative director is redesigning the Hotel Métropole in Monte Carlo, making over its exterior premises including the pool, terrace, gardens and a new Joel Robuchon restaurant.
Dubai shipbuilder dives into business of underwater hotels

Dubai is splashing into the business of underwater hotels again. The Gulf emirate's state shipbuilding division Drydocks World said in a statement it has signed on with a Swiss company to become the sole Middle East construction contractor of the futuristic hotels.

What are the factors that decide how much a general manager should be paid? HVS looks at compensation trends in North America's top six cities to answer this question. Findings indicate New York City luxury general managers receive the highest median base salary of $265,309 followed by San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston and Washington D.C.

Viceroy Hotel Group will operate the new Nef Bebeköy development in Istanbul, Turkey. Viceroy Istanbul, a luxury five-star urban resort, is scheduled to open in late 2013 and will mark Viceroy Hotel Group's first European property, and second hotel project in Turkey after the Viceroy Bodrum which is currently under development and slated to open in 2014.
Oetker to open 10 Mideast hotels
Frank Marrenbach, CEO of Oetker Hotels Collection, has announced that the European luxury hotel chain is eyeing a range of hotels in the Middle East in the coming years and has initiated talks with potential partners in the region. "The OHC is focusing on the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey," Marrenbach said.

Starwood to open 40 hotels in Middle East, North Africa over 5 years

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide plans to open 40 new hotels in the Middle East and North Africa over the next five years, the hotel operator said. The company currently has nearly 70 high-end hotels in the region, including a recently opened Westin in Abu Dhabi and St. Regis in Qatar. It has a long history in the area, beginning with its opening of a Sheraton in 1966 in Kuwait.
Sunstone's Chicago hotel purchase part of expansion plan
Sunstone Hotel Investors agreed to buy the Wyndham Chicago hotel from Blackstone Group for $88.4 million as part of a plan to expand in major U.S. cities including Boston, Washington and New York. The 417-room hotel will be renamed the Hyatt Chicago Magnificent Mile.
Marriott makes it 16 in Thailand
Marriott International will open three new properties in Thailand this year, further strengthening its position in the country with 16 hotels in its Thai portfolio. The Rayong Marriott Resort & Spa, The Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit and the Marriott Executive Apartments Bangkok-Sukhumvit Thonglor will all open in 2012, adding to an already extensive portfolio of hotels and brands.
Hotel calms image amid bankruptcy

Hotel owner M Waikiki LLC and Modern Management Service LLC have been carving out a new brand since August. Efforts began after the firing of former hotel manager Marriott amid a hostile takeover and subsequent bankruptcy filing. After the initial shuffle, the property was renamed the Modern Honolulu. The Modern is battling to position itself among Oahu's top luxury properties.
