BMW is set to broaden the design of its "X" family as shown by this rendering of the 2014 BMW X5 by German magazine Auto Zeitung. Most prominent is the new grille, which is both larger and wider than the current design and similar to that seen on the latest generation 3 Series.

BMW recalls 1.3 million cars worldwide

BMW, the world's largest premium carmaker, is recalling about 1.3 million cars for repair worldwide due to a possible problem with a battery cable cover in the trunk, the carmaker said recently. The recall affects 5 and 6 Series BMWs built between 2003 and 2010, BMW said in a statement.

BMW begins cooperation with Toyota on next-generation batteries

Toyota Motor Corp. and BMW have begun joint research into next-generation batteries to power cleaner vehicles. The two automakers will try to increase the performance and capacity of lithium-ion batteries with new combinations of materials, Munich-based BMW said in a statement. In addition to the research cooperation, BMW will supply Toyota's European unit with diesel engines starting in 2014.

The redesigned 2012 BMW 328i, with its 240-hp, twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder and an eight-speed automatic transmission, gets a fuel-economy rating of 23/33 mpg city/highway, according to the EPA. While that figure is respectable, it's lower that what was expected compared to the original EPA rating of 23/36 mpg, according to Autoblog.com.

More details have emerged about BMW's i8 plug-in sports car including that it nets 104.2 mpg on the European drive cycle, will sprint to 62 mph in 4.9 seconds and no non-hybrid variants are being considered. The 2+2 made with carbon fiber body and aluminum alloy rolling chassis had previously been rumored to be a candidate for V8 or V10-powered with no battery and electrics, but BMW said this line will highlight its electrification ethic, and represents a forerunner of more to come.

The BMW M6 Convertible and BMW X1 Sport Activity Vehicle will make their World Debuts at the 2012 New York International Auto Show on Wednesday, April 4 at the BMW Stand from 10:15–10:40 a.m. at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan, N.Y. The BMW M6 Convertible and BMW X1 will be joined by the BMW M6 Coupe, BMW X6 M and the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe as the featured BMW vehicles in New York. The BMW i3 and i8 Concepts will also be featured providing a glimpse into the future of mobility.

The Rum Bum team, winner of six Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge races in 2010 and 2011, is switching horses. Beginning at the Barber Motorsports Park this weekend, Matt Plumb and Nick Longhi will move from their familiar E92 M3 to a Porsche Carrera. Both cars will be at Barber; the M3 will be run in practice, but the team's intention is to run the Porsche in the race unless something unforeseen happens.
