Brampton's monster-home madness
The Globe and Mail
The partly constructed house at 443 Centre Street North in Brampton looks like it was dropped from the sky — it's the big blue whale in a sea of modest bungalows, semis and detached homes. For now, it's a shell of a dwelling made of teal-tinted wood, but plans call for eight bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and (including the basement) more than 11,000 square feet of living space.

Should realtors rank schools? The perils of home-brew stats
The Globe and Mail
Mississauga realtor Susi Kostyniuk saw a deficiency in Fraser Institute school rankings; those scores lacked what she calls consistency because they capture only one year of information (despite being available annually from 2008 to 2012). And so in order to make it easier for families to predict the quality of schools into the future she created a weighted average of scores over the past seven years using her own (unexplained) weighting system.

How to keep your home's purchase price secret
Toronto Star
Clients often ask whether I can keep the price they are paying for their home off the title record. The main reason is for privacy. They don't think it is anybody's business but theirs. You can do it if you pay the land transfer tax in advance. The tax is usually paid by your lawyer, but you can do it yourself.

A crisis in leadership
By Michael J. Berens
Leaders must make difficult decisions that are not always popular. They instigate changes that upend people's lives and shift the balances of power and wealth. Are we too close to our time to recognize truly gifted leaders or to fully appreciate the effects of their decisions? Should we not be concerned about the ostensible leadership vacuum? Perhaps. But I suspect there are other forces at play.

Trump tower hotel-condo owner to auction suite
Metro News
A local investor has decided to try to sell off his $1-million-plus hotel-condo suite in Toronto's Trump hotel like a piece of fine jewelry or aging farm equipment — by auction. After watching listings for about a dozen similar units in the beleaguered luxury project languish on the MLS for more than a year without a single taker, the owner of the 12th-floor suite — himself a veteran realtor — has turned to Ritchies Auctioneers.

That almost impossibly tiny house in Toronto that we reported on recently has found a buyer after just three weeks on the market, though it sold for well below asking price. The property at 30 Hanson St. on the east side of Toronto's inner city got a lot of publicity on real estate sites and blogs as an example of just how tight the city's housing market has become.
