Message from the President, Denise Dilbey: October, 2013
BREB
Is there value in enlisting the services of a REALTOR®? Absolutely there is! The Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) has responded to a poll completed in 2011. They asked, listened and responded to how OREA could better help support REALTORS®. 97 per cent of REALTORS® felt OREA should be promoting REALTOR® value! So we welcome the "Value Ad Campaign." The value of using a REALTOR® is at the heart of an exciting new advertising and media campaign being launched by OREA.

Canada's soaring real estate market: Feel good now, pay later
The Globe and Mail
It's a bad thing for Canada if housing prices keep rising. Soaring house values are the most significant financial event of the past decade for the typical household. Now, it's time to question how much good has come of it.

Councillor John Sprovieri: Brampton city hall project a 'fiasco'
Toronto Star
A Brampton councillor is calling the city's controversial $500 million downtown redevelopment project — now facing a major delay — a "fiasco." During a recent council meeting, Councillor John Sprovieri suggested a picture of an Italian wine jug should be painted on the wall of the main building under construction, pointing out that in Italian such a jug is called a "fiasco." He said it would aptly represent how the project has been handled.

It's not business as usual... how to adjust to today's realities
Real Estate Magazine
I entered the real estate profession as a salesperson and member of the Toronto Real Estate Board in 1990. Property prices had peaked in 1989 ($273,698 average) and slid down for six years to an average price of $198,150. Yes, salespeople were complaining then too about business being difficult, but a good number of them were still doing very well.

Ontario housing co-ops get more options to resolve tenant disputes
CP24
Ontario's non-profit housing co-operatives will soon have other options to resolve tenant disputes. A bill that would allow co-ops to apply to the Landlord and Tenant Board to evict tenants passed recently in the legislature with the support of all three parties. They'll also have access to mediation services to resolve disputes.

The developer who wants to make Canadian housing affordable
The Globe and Mail
Daniels Corp. isn't run by a central-casting developer but by a onetime social-housing activist and part-time musician, Mitchell Cohen. Daniels markets itself as a developer who looks out for the little guy, the one who embraces public-private partnerships like the revitalization of Toronto's massive Regent Park public housing project.

Land survey outlines what's really yours
Toronto Star
I think it's time that a land survey be made a compulsory part of every real estate transaction. It baffles me why a clause to that effect is not a part of the standard form agreement of purchase and sale, or at the very least added to every contract as part of a schedule.

Using your vehicle as a billboard
Real Estate Magazine
It's not a question with an easy answer: is advertising your real estate services on your vehicle a business-savvy move or a bad decision? Glenn Wildenmann, a broker with Groupe Sutton Performer in Pointe-Claire, QC, says, "It's a great idea as long as you do it right. It provides instant and constant exposure. Rarely a day goes by where someone doesn't say, 'Hey, Glenn, I saw you on the road yesterday.' You are a mobile billboard at a reasonable cost, but you must make sure your ad works."

Condo apartments spread into small town Ontario
CBC News
Some retirees in small towns in eastern Ontario are making the move to apartment living, but a growth in rural condominiums is giving those that can afford it the option of downsizing and staying in their communities. Park View Homes held its opening on Saturday for Cinnamon Suites in Carleton Place, ON, a collection of apartments with prices ranging from $222,900 — for a 700-square-foot one-bedroom unit — to $334,900 for an 1,110-square-foot three-bedroom unit.
