CAA is accepting applications for the second year of its International Travel Grant Program, generously supported by the Getty Foundation, which will provide funding to twenty art historians, museum curators, and artists who teach art history to attend the 2013 Annual Conference in New York. Applicants must live and work outside the United States; professionals from developing countries or from nations underrepresented in CAA's membership are especially encouraged to apply. Deadline: August 15, 2012.

Artists are still key to the American experience. The sustainability of the American democratic experiment, within an increasingly diverse society impoverished by unrestrained capitalism, requires professionally creative, publicly critical citizens. But can America's art programs produce them? As long as most remain in bed with banks as self-serving, tuition-driven institutions producing nonunionized workers for a dated, late-twentieth-century economy of rarefied trophies, they will remain morally and ethically bankrupt, unable to face the future.

Much fanfare greeted the $388 million made by Christie's postwar and contemporary evening sale in New York earlier this month—its highest total ever. Few seemed to notice that the auction was unprecedented in another way: it had ten lots by eight women artists, amounting to a male-to-female ratio of five-to-one. Yet proceeds on all the works by women artists in the sale tallied a mere $17 million—less than 5 percent of the total and not even half the price achieved that night by a single picture of two naked women by Yves Klein. Indeed, depictions of women often command the highest prices, whereas works by them do not.

Filming Junct: The Trashing of Higher Ed

It was part road trip, part documentary shooting, with the goal of raising awareness about issues faced by adjuncts and others on the fringes of the power structure in academe. Debra Leigh Scott, a member of the board of directors of the New Faculty Majority, an adjunct in the Philadelphia area, and an independent filmmaker, and Chris LaBree, another filmmaker, hit the road in a Ford Escape crammed with filming equipment that took them to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Toledo, and back to Philadelphia.
The two have been working on a documentary called Junct: The Trashing of Higher Ed in America for the last year, and the trip was part of an effort to gather more adjunct voices.

The University of Missouri will soon be without a university press. The university announced last week that it would phase out its press, beginning in July. The news was made public in a larger statement about the university's shifting strategic priorities. Such announcements about other university presses have often spurred protests and attempts to save them, but so far the news about Missouri has been greeted quietly.

Painting of South African President Forces Gallery to Close its Doors

Jacob Zuma, the South African president and leader of the African National Congress (ANC) political party, has filed a legal suit against the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg for displaying a painting by Brett Murray, The Spear (2011), which depicts Zuma in a mock-heroic pose with exposed genitalia. Zuma and the ANC contend that the work violates his constitutional right to dignity. The ANC also says that work refers to stereotypes around African male sexuality.

I have never visited the Rocca Estense in San Felice sul Panaro. Now the towers of this majestic castle have been toppled, while frescoes in the town are apparently gone forever. Three churches have been totally destroyed. A sixteenth-century church is also believed lost. The mayor says the town has lost all its artistic patrimony. So I will never see these marvels. An entire little urban world of beauty that grew over centuries and expressed, in microcosm, the genius of the Renaissance has been swept away by the devastating earthquake in northern Italy.

Stop the Press: Half of Self-Published Authors Earn Less Than $500

Despite the splash caused by self-publishing superstars such as Amanda Hocking and E. L. James, the average amount earned by do-it-yourself authors last year was just $10,000—and half made less than $500. With Hocking raking in sales of $2.5 million, James signing to a mainstream press for a six-figure advance, and a slew of deals for other self-published successes, the sector is starting to look like a gold mine for would-be authors. But a survey of 1,007 self-published writers—one of the most comprehensive insights into the growing market to date—found that while a small percentage of authors were bringing in sums of $100,000 plus in 2011, average earnings were just $10,000 a year. This amount, however, is significantly skewed by the top earners, with less than 10 percent of self-publishing authors earning about 75 percent of the reported revenue.

A large exhibition of Charline von Heyl's paintings is currently on view at Tate Liverpool. I haven't been there, but I’ve seen it, in a short film on the Guardian website. I have a sense of the bold abstract paintings holding their own in the airy, light-filled space. But what kind of seeing is this? The visual material the internet makes available through museum websites, media platforms, YouTube clips, or artists' own webpages allows instant access to practically any number of exhibitions. But does this screen-bound experience, with its dissolution of place and encounter, allow for paying attention?
