The Creative Industries Need to Focus on Talent Rather Than Free Labor Guardian Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
For the creative industries to thrive, from the first scribblings at playgroup to the most sophisticated innovations of our master's students and beyond, we must ensure that all those with the innate talent and potential are able to access careers in our sector and flourish. It is now broadly accepted, and experienced, that the creative industries' "recruitment" methodology relies upon an extended period of unpaid work (in practice, entirely illegal by even the most basic of minimum wage law interpretations). "I know it when I see it." Potter Stewart, the late Supreme Court justice, famously used that phrase in writing about obscenity. Others might use it to describe art. Danny Guthrie, an associate professor of art at Michigan State University, is but the latest to learn that one person's art may strike others as porn. More
To Fund Renovations, Bethany College Selling "Crown Jewel" Painting Kansas City Star Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
The Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton's large-scale import of big-name artworks for her just-opened Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas, has been the talk of the nation for months. Now, the board of another museum in the country's sprawling middle has decided to sell off what one expert describes as the "crown jewel" of its collection. The Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery on the campus of Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, is scheduled to sell its sole work by Marsden Hartley, one of the leading American modernist painters of the twentieth century. A group within the Occupy Wall Street movement is in discussions to find a multipurpose, indoor arts space, which is to be used for "studio space, rehearsals, concerts, storage, performances, exhibitions, teach-ins, film screenings, art classes for children, sleeping, etc.," according to its website. The Arts and Culture committee of the New York City General Assembly, the protest group behind the movement, is planning to use shared office space on Wall Street with other Occupy groups, and is considering another offer from the arts blog Hyperallergic to borrow space in its Brooklyn offices, among other options. Open Letter to Artists Performance Club Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
I participated in an audition on November 7 for performance artist Marina Abramović's production for the annual gala of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. I auditioned because I wanted to participate in the project of an artist whose work I have followed with interest for many years and because it was affiliated with MOCA, an institution that I have a connection with as a Los Angeles–based artist. Out of approximately eight hundred applicants, I was one of two hundred selected to audition. Ultimately, I was offered the role of one of six nude females to re-enact Abramović's signature work, Nude with Skeleton (2002), at the center of tables with seats priced at up to $100,000 each. For reasons I detail here—reasons which I strongly believe need to be made public—I turned it down. More When Art Breeds Success in the Bedroom Guardian Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
To deal with their realization that some artists get a lot of sex while others get little or none, Helen Clegg, Daniel Nettle, and Dorothy Miell made use of an ancient tool—a tool that mathematicians count among the sexiest of mankind's inventions: the logarithm. The trio had joined forces, as they later described it, to "investigate the relationship between mating success and artistic success in a sample of 236 visual artists." More
On Michael Kaiser and Citizen Critics Createquity Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Michael Kaiser is so hit or miss. Last week he published this truly unfortunate commentary on the slow death of professional arts criticism, and the rise of citizen critics as a result: "[T]he growing influence of blogs, chat rooms and message boards devoted to the arts has given the local professional critic a slew of competitors…. Many arts institutions even allow their audience members to write their own critiques on the organizational website. This is a scary trend." Teaching can be a lonely enterprise. Research and service, the other two legs of the promotion-and-tenure tripod, certainly demand self-motivation, a personal work ethic, and the ability to focus one's mental effort. But no matter whether you are holding forth in an intimate doctoral seminar or lecturing to five hundred freshmen, you are doing it by yourself. More

In Brussels, the European Commission proposed the world's largest-ever cultural funding program under the title Creative Europe.
