Related Midwest president wants to dot skyline with indelible structures
    TradingCharts
Standing in a hallway of an unfinished apartment high-rise on Lake Shore Drive, sporting a dark suit and hard hat, Curt Bailey bent his head and stared at the carpet. Then he and a group of his subordinates went to a different floor and stared down once more, at different carpeting. The choice of a carpet pattern, one subtle, one louder, for outside the elevators had been a topic of conversation for two weeks. These are the decisions that Curt Bailey, president of Related Midwest, is sweating as he nears the May opening of 500 N. Lake Shore Drive, a luxury 500-unit rental high-rise.

    'Green' buildings gaining status
    NuWire Investor
The commercial real estate construction and investment philosophy that places a premium on location and quality is giving way to interest in sustainable design, according to market analysts. A focus on "green" development, particularly with refurbishment efforts and new construction of iconic buildings in New York City, is drawing more attention to the benefits of an eco-friendly focus that include lower operating costs and long-term savings as energy price rise. Investors are now looking to build green portfolios, which is also encouraging more builders to lean in that direction.

Are 'B' buildings poised for a rebound?
    Finance & Commerce
The beleaguered "B" office market has struggled to climb out of the steep real-estate recession. This could be a year when that momentum finally begins to shift in favor of "B" buildings. "I think the 'B' market is poised for some growth in 2013, primarily because the 'A' market has seen quite a bit of absorption over the last few years, and in many submarkets, Class A landlords are beginning to increase rental rates and decrease concessions," says Mike Salmen, a partner at Transwestern in Minneapolis.

Study: Renting a home gets foot in the door for buying
    Boston Herald
Could rental houses owned and managed by deep-pocketed hedge funds and big investors be the post-bust stepping stones to home ownership for huge numbers of renters? Could they also provide a form of safe harbor or sanctuary for thousands of families who were displaced by financial difficulties from their previous homes through foreclosures or short sales?

Real-estate market trends: Solid foundation for construction industry optimism
    Millionaire Corner
The Construction Industry Forecast for 2013 is looking brighter, according to a survey released by Wells Fargo Equipment Finance. Wells Fargo's Construction Optimism Quotient — the survey's primary benchmark for measuring contractor and equipment distributor sentiment — is at 106 for 2013, marking the second consecutive year with an optimistic reading regarding year-over-year improvement in local nonresidential construction activity. While the number is down from 114 in 2012, it still represents the third-highest national optimism reading in the past 13 years, the report stated.

2 apartment towers will change face of downtown Minneapolis
    Star Tribune
In a quiet neighborhood of squat brick apartment buildings on the south edge of downtown Minneapolis, Magellan Development Group is building a sleek, 36-story apartment tower with a raft of hotel-like amenities, including an indoor dog park and pet wash. Ten blocks away, in the shadow of the 57-story IDS Center, the Opus Group is busy building its own luxury apartment building, a 26-story tower that will have direct access to the city's skyway system. By late 2014, both buildings will make the downtown skyline shine a whole lot brighter, but the biggest impact will be at street level.
