CAA advocating on your behalf — Illinois General Assembly update
    CAA
The Illinois General Assembly is back this week from a brief hiatus prior to the Illinois primary election. Although legislators have introduced more than 3000 bills since the start of the session in January, they have not seen many of those bills advance out of the Rules Committee or other substantive committees to be considered on the floor of the Illinois House or Senate. In general, the pace of the legislative process has been slow, with many cancelled committees and session days — not untypical for the second year of the biennial General Assembly session.

We do, however, continue to work on a few issues of concern to members of the CAA.

South Loop to land big new apartment building
    Crain's Chicago Business
As he wraps up apartment projects in Old Town and Wrigleyville, developer Jim Letchinger is preparing to launch an even bigger one in the South Loop. Mr. Letchinger said he plans a 469-unit tower at 1000 S. Clark St., just north of the Target store on Roosevelt Road. He is "very, very close" to securing a construction loan for the development, which he would build in a joint venture with lender iStar Financial Inc. iStar which took the property back from its prior owner in 2011.

What $1,000 will get you in a new apartment
    The Street
What can $1,000 bring you in an apartment rental? It's a question more Americans ask every day. According to the National Association of Realtors, there are 40 million renters in the U.S. today, but that number should rise by another 6 million over the next 10 years as homeownership grows too expensive for many Americans.

Market snapshot: New jobs and rental stock do little to shake up stabilizing California apartment market
    Multi-Housing News Online
As we embark on 2014, it seems that the "status quo" of Los Angeles' apartment market that we've seen over the past couple of years will continue. With jobs set to pop up around L.A. County in all major sectors, and construction providing a steady influx of new units for the city's apartment stock, the city will continue its streak of stabilization that began in 2012.

Flurry of apartment development leaves NoMa with high vacancy rate
    The Washington Post
NoMa, a moniker for the D.C. neighborhood north of Massachusetts Avenue and east of Union Station, has come a long way since the 2004 opening of the New York Avenue Metro station. Once the Metro station (now called NoMa-Gallaudet University station) opened, crumbling old industrial buildings and parking lots were soon replaced by new buildings containing a mix of office, apartment and retail space concentrated around the station.

    Mindfulness in managing risk
    By Dr. David Hillson
Mindfulness has its roots in Eastern religion. It is also used therapeutically to treat a variety of psychological conditions, as well as in coaching to encourage excellence in healthy people. Used properly, mindfulness can also make our risk management more effective. Being mindful means bringing your complete attention to your current experience on a moment-to-moment basis, being aware of everything in your surroundings, acknowledging what is there and accepting it as valid. So how can this help us to manage risk better?
