    Energy Benchmarking begins June 1
    CAA
Residential buildings 250,000 square feet or bigger will be subject to the City of Chicago Energy Benchmarking Ordinance beginning June 1. The ordinance is intended to drive awareness and transparency to help unlock energy cost savings opportunities. Affected buildings will receive a notification letter from the City by the end of April with a unique building ID number and instructions on how to comply by the August 1 deadline. CAA held two panel discussions on the new measure and additional training opportunities are available from the City. For more information, visit the Chicago Energy Benchmarking website at www.CityofChicago.org/EnergyBenchmarking.

When the rent gets too high, apartments get smaller
    Chicago Magazine
Recently Chicagoans have been talking about transit-oriented development a lot — and in particular, small but well-appointed apartments not far from the city center in desirable neighborhoods that are reminiscent of the studios and efficiencies that long-ago generations of young Chicagoans flocked to as the city grew. Some of these places are seemingly quite small for the price, targeted towards young singles who plan on spending a lot of time at work or elsewhere and who don't need much more than a place to lay their heads — or are at least willing to skimp on that to live alone in the city.

Rahm Emanuel gets affordable housing help from luxury condo developer
    Next City
Luxury condo developer Related Companies — a familiar name thanks to projects like Manhattan’s Hudson Yards and a Citi Bike bike-share investment — is adding more affordable housing to its portfolio. The Wall Street Journal reports that Related agreed to purchase over 3,000 affordable apartments for approximately $270 million. In addition to keeping the units affordable, the developer will invest $262 million in renovations. Half of the units are in Chicago while the rest are located throughout other cities.

1 in 4 renters use half their pay for housing costs
The Associated Press via USA Today
More than one in four U.S. renters have to use at least half their family income to pay for housing and utilities. That's the finding of an analysis of Census data by Enterprise Community Partners, a nonprofit that helps finance affordable housing. The number of such households has jumped 26 percent to 11.25 million since 2007.

MacArthur Foundation winding down housing investments
    Chicago Tribune
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has invested $271 million to create and study affordable housing during the past 15 years, including $76.5 million in its hometown of Chicago. The foundation is winding down its housing-related investments, hoping that other foundations and funders will step up. Organizations on the receiving end of MacArthur's largesse worry not just about the absence of funds from an entity considered the gorilla in the room but also about the message it may send, namely that the affordable housing issue is "fixed."

11 characteristics of a profitable rental investment
    Inman
Out of all of the diversity found in the 1 percent — the most wealthy in history — the one common thread is that they owned real estate. Building a real estate portfolio and becoming a landlord can be one of the best wealth creation tools available. But, if you're not careful it's also one of the easiest ways to lose a lot of money.
