Multifamily sector booming
The U.S. housing market recovery continues and the multifamily sector is also seeing its share of new growth. Analysts say developers will have created 145,000 new units in 2013 with more in the pipeline, but demand is keeping apace. The new units and as well as those planned for the years to come are being absorbed by people who are looking to rent rather than buy, especially in urban areas where home costs are high. Rents are residing despite a flood of new units in places like Seattle, Austin, Raleigh and Washington, D.C.
Luxe lobbies set the tone for apartment, condo buildings
Wander into the lobbies of some Chicago-area condo and apartment buildings and you may never want to leave. Posh sofas beckon with luxurious cushions. The delicate fragrance of fresh flowers mixes with the aroma of brewing coffee.
Residential lobby, you've come a long way.
Global lockmaker seeks key to future profits in the cloud
Reuters via Chicago Tribune
Despite the rapid pace of technology that has overhauled many consumer goods, the front door lock and key is little changed since the 1800s. That is about to change — to virtual keys in data clouds, if the world's biggest lockmaker gets its way.
Unconventional play on rental properties
The Motley Fool
Numerous companies are attempting to take advantage of the previously weak housing prices and the surging demand for rental properties. So far, all of the models are unproven as the complexity of managing houses with individual characteristics at a corporate level faces many hurdles to reach an efficient scale. The traditional model has been to purchase distressed properties in housing markets hit by the financial crisis and turn the houses into rental properties.
Scammers right at home in sizzling rental market
The Seattle Times
A man says he lost about $3,500 on a scam Craigslist rental ad. Landlords get calls about their properties being up for rent at unbelievably low rents. Scammers create phantom ads using photos posted by the real landlords and even create phony email addresses using the landlord's name.
Transforming Chicago's public housing
Chicago's plan to transform its entire portfolio of public housing is still unfinished after 13 years, more than $1 billion in investment, and the displacement of tens of thousands of public housing residents — displacement that continues to this day for some families.
But the Chicago Housing Authority has managed to turn some of its strongest critics into supporters, including one housing expert who carefully tracked Chicago's public housing residents over more than a decade of tumultuous change.
Where are the highest apartment rents in Chicago?
Crain's Chicago Business
A new 500-unit tower at 500 N. Lake Shore Drive tops the list of 10 most expensive apartment buildings in downtown Chicago. Four of the top 10 buildings are in River North and six are new, part of a downtown development wave expected to continue through at least 2015. Crain's compiled the list from interviews with landlords and a report from Chicago-based consulting firm Appraisal Research Counselors. The average apartment in the top 10 is 898 square feet and rents for more than $2,800 a month, according to Appraisal Research.
Four Seasons shows businesses how to use Pinterest
By Suzanne Mason
According to a June study by Semiocast, there are approximately 70 million users on the visual social media site Pinterest. The study also found only 500,000 businesses on the site. Many businesses have embraced marketing through social media, but few know what to do with a visual site like Pinterest. Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts showed what can be accomplished with the recent launch of an interactive concierge Pinterest program called “Pin.Pack.Go."
Keys for successful urban retail investments
In the years leading up to the housing bust, retailers and retail investors were chasing rooftops further out into far suburbia and the cornfields. Easy money fueled this trend as urban dwellers sought to purchase new homes in fast-growing areas and retailers took advantage of good bargains on land and building costs.
