DID YOU KNOW? Starting on Dec. 31, 2019, your leasing agents and applications for any properties in Cook County cannot inquire about the criminal history of applicants, and cannot perform a criminal screening as part of the initial application process. It's imperative your staff is aware of the implications of this ordinance, and CAA is dedicated to educating our members on the JHO. Join Attorneys Jessica Ryan (KSN Law) and David Barhydt (Law Offices of David K. Barhydt) on Nov. 7th to learn more about the new ordinance and how your operations will need to be amended before the new year. This class is free for CAA members! Sign up on our website today!
CALL TO ACTION: Visit the CAA Action Center TODAY to send a letter of concern to your Cook County Commissioner regarding the Just Housing Ordinance. The Cook County Commission on Human Rights will convene a special meeting this Wednesday, Oct. 16th, to discuss the revised version of the Just Housing Ordinance Rules.

The Covent Hotel, a historic single-room occupancy building in Lincoln Park, could be restored and redeveloped into a mixed-income project that offers both affordable and market-rate units. The nonprofit NHP Foundation and partner Drummond Development presented their plan for the site at 2653 N. Clark Street at a community meeting earlier this month, hosted by 43rd Ward Alderman Michele Smith.
CEDARst Companies' FLATS brand will soon debut its newest property, The Draper, at 5050 N. Broadway in Chicago. The building is an adaptive reuse project that converted a largely vacant, 1950s office building, originally home to Combined Insurance headquarters, into 342 FLATS-style apartments.

Two more developers are cooking up residential projects on Chicago Avenue in River North, including one that will feature 36 apartments rented out dorm-style: by the bed, not the unit.
Chicago developer John Bucksbaum wants to build the seven-story "co-living" project at the southeast corner of Chicago Avenue and LaSalle Street. Bucksbaum would team up on the 108-bed development with Common, a New York-based firm that has been opening co-living buildings across the country.
JVM Realty, a leading vertically integrated multifamily real estate investment and property management firm, announced it has acquired Uptown La Grange, a 254-unit luxury apartment community in La Grange, Illinois, a vibrant suburb located 17 miles west of downtown Chicago. JVM Management Inc. will manage the property, which was built in 2017. Uptown La Grange marks the second suburban Chicago apartment community JVM has acquired in the last two weeks.
Between the Chicago City Council recently tightening rules governing how investors can transform condominium developments into rental communities, and the recent headlines about Lake Point Tower residents tightening their bylaws to shut down a deconversion attempt, you might think deconversions were dying in Chicago. However, out in north suburban Gurnee, one just got done, showing such opportunities may still be abundant in the suburbs, especially with older workforce housing.
A developer has secured financing to turn the former Alexander Lumber property in downtown Oswego into a $69 million mixed-use development.
Village officials announced this week Geneva-based developer Shodeen Group LLC has closed with its lender to build the first phase of The Reserve at Hudson Crossing.
