Aldermen endorse tougher smoke detector rules
    Chicago Tribune
A City Council committee endorsed changes to a city smoke detector requirement that allowed building owners to escape penalties if they install the detectors after being caught without them. Under current city ordinance, building owners who are cited for failure to have working smoke or carbon monoxide detectors can simply install or fix them before a hearing and escape fines, which run from $300 to $500 a day, said Matthew Beaudet, first deputy commissioner of the Department of Buildings.

Most precious thing in downtown Chicago? Dirt
    Crain's Chicago Business
As high-rise developers keep stamping out more apartments and condominiums, they are paying up for a key — and scarce—raw material: dirt. In Chicago's strongest neighborhoods, prices of development sites have eclipsed precrash levels, fueled by an apartment and hotel construction wave and a resurgent condo market, developers and brokers say. Demand for land is rising, but the supply isn't.

Report: Chicago rents highest they've been in years, but we've got it good
    DNAinfo
Rent prices in Chicago are the highest they've been in three years, but compared to cities on the East and West coasts, we've got it good. Lovely, a San Francisco-based rental website, released a quarterly report breaking down rental markets across the country. Though Chicago's median rent price — $1,684 — is the highest it's been in years, "you could rent two apartments in Chicago for the price of one in NYC," the company says.

Next up for Streeterville: 498 more apartments
    Crain's Chicago Business
The developer of the Optima Chicago Center rental building in Streeterville is forging ahead with the project's next phase, adding another big clump of units to an increasingly crowded downtown apartment market. A venture led by developer and architect David Hovey recently started construction on what Hovey said would be a 57-story, 498-unit apartment building at 220 E. Illinois St.

The difference in monthly housing costs between renters and homeowners
    Lifehacker
It's not easy to decide if buying a home is worth it or if renting makes more financial sense. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics offers some food for thought. The BLS compared average annual expenditures on housing-related items between homeowners and renters (2012 data). The findings probably won't surprise you: renters, on average, pay more for the roof over their heads, but homeowners pay more for everything else associated with it, such as maintenance, insurance, and water and other public services.

How properties can stay a step ahead of accessibility compliance
    Property Management Insider
Properties that are noncompliant to provisions of the Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 and American's With Disabilities Act of 1990 subject themselves to millions of dollars in damages. Most often, violators could prevent such exposure if only they'd fully understood the rules and regulations and known whether or not the property was compliant.
