Compounding pharmacists battle for solution to painkiller overuse

Compounding pharmacists say they can offer a possible answer to the continuing overuse of opioid painkillers across the country, but decisions from pharmacy benefit managers to limit coverage of some custom medications could squash that solution before it is extensively tried. Recently, Express Scripts, the country's largest pharmacy benefits manager, announced that it was dropping coverage for 1,000 drug ingredients found in many compounded medications, beginning Sept. 15.

Organized pharmacy sends letter to USP on proposed General Chapter <800>
IACP
IACP and several other pharmacy associations sent a joint letter to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) regarding the proposed General Chapter <800> Hazardous Drugs — Handling in Healthcare Settings. "We respectfully request that the chapter be numbered above <1000> in order to be classified as a general information chapter, imparting best practices," the letter states.

New study finds highest rates of decline in prescription drug use nationwide

Five states that have implemented multi-faceted prescription drug abuse prevention programs in recent years showed the highest rate of decline in prescription drug misuse rates nationwide, according to a new study issued by Quest Diagnostics, the world's leading provider of diagnostic information services. The findings suggest that broad, collaborative measures that include prescription drug databases and physician and patient education may be effective at curbing the nation's epidemic of prescription drug abuse.

Such far-reaching decisions reflect the lingering distrust of outsourced CSPs, according to several administrators from hospitals that have made this move.

Preparation is critical to high-risk sterile compounding

Every year, FDA reports shortages of hundreds of drugs, the majority of which are sterile injectables. Currently, there are 251 drugs in shortage, 199 of which are sterile injectables, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. These numbers are similar to those of the last 5 years, according to FDA.
