In a letter, which was spearheaded by APhA, the signatories noted support for the overall goals of Chapter <800>, but because of ongoing concerns with compliance difficulties and regulatory overlap, requested that Chapter <800> be moved to be considered more of a “guidance” than mandatory practice by numbering the chapter above Chapter <1000> while needed analyses are completed.

How a pharmacy was designed to limit exposure to toxic drugs

In October 2012, an outbreak of fungal meningitis was reported in the United States. The infection was traced to fungal contamination in IV fluid epidural steroid injections prepared by New England Compounding Center, a compounding pharmacy in Framingham, Massachusetts. By March 10, 2013, 48 people had died and 720 were treated for persistent fungal infections. Subsequently, former NECC executives and technicians were indicted on a host of federal charges related to the outbreak.

Compound pharmacies complain FDA is compounding their problems

As far as compounding pharmacies are concerned, the FDA is compounding their problems. After a fungal meningitis outbreak that claimed 64 lives two years ago was traced to a compounding pharmacy, the agency has been cracking down. Dozens of compounders have been inspected, and some were issued warning letters for poor practices.
