PMA's continued commitment to drive more alignment within the wireless charging industry has created opportunities to accelerate market adoption of wireless charging for our members. The PMA is now enlisting the help of Flextronics Power Solutions to quickly bring this technology to market, leveraging their scale and years of experience developing consumer electronics. Flextronics Power has joined the PMA board of directors, adding to an influential group of industry leaders which also includes AT&T, Duracell, Powermat Technologies, Starbucks and the U.S. Government's Energy Star (non-voting).
Flextronics Power Solutions is one of the most respected global providers of end-to-end supply chain solutions for electronics; designing and manufacturing devices used by billions of consumers worldwide. Flextronics will use its vast network of resources to develop products for PMA members and promote PMA technology among the general consumer public. More details...
All PMA board members, including Flextronics, will be present at the next PMA Members Conference planned for June 10-11, 2014 in Fremont, California, at UL Verification Services. This will be an incredible opportunity to network with other companies including the board and get the most recent updates on the status of PMA related activities like certification and specifications development. The last conference had over 100 attendees from more than 50 companies. This event will also be hosted in conjunction with the next PMA PlugFest following directly after the Member Conference June 12-13, 2014. Therefore we expect an outstanding turnout and we look forward to seeing you there!
As the next PMA system release progresses, the PMA is seeing an increased interest in members seeking PMA device certification. Multiple devices have either passed certification or are in the queue to be certified soon and PMA will be hosting the second PlugFest for 2014 in June! PMA Certified devices will also be published to the public website soon so stay tuned.

Meetings for the PMA Network Working Group (NWG) have begun! NWG is responsible for development and maintenance of network communication strategies and protocols. To date, the NWG has approved multi-volume document structure for the Wireless Power Transfer Network (WPTN) Specification and is now developing initial drafts of volumes included in the first release.
Publication text for v2.00 of the PMA Inductive Wireless Power and Charging specification for both the PMA receiver and PMA transmitter are now posted to the Resources tab of the PMA Member Workspace. These revisions include modifications that account for issues identified during the most recent PMA PlugFest. Publication text for the PMA Certification Manual, PlugFest Event Process Document, PMA Sustainability Requirements and PMA Regulatory Requirements have also been posted to the PMA Member Workspace. IPG is now focusing its work on System Release 1 Enhancements which includes 15W power, multi-coil transmitter configurations, extended transmitter range, enhanced network communication, and multimode operation guidelines.

CERTIFICATION PROGRAM UPDATE
UL Verification Services of Fremont California has successfully completed testing of three products for PMA certification this month with many more in the queue for May/June. At the beginning of April, UL trained the remaining PMA Accredited labs (AT4 and TUV) in order to launch global operations. The next phase in the launch is a final audit of these labs which is targeted for completion by the end of June for Taiwan, Japan, Europe, Korea and China.
PMA is now focused on the launching a Transmitter Certification program. Since the release of the transmitter technical specifications is complete, the CWG has issued a call for contributions for the Compliance Test Procedures, which is the first step in this phase of the program. The PMA is working out program details including key milestones that will be made available shortly.
One automaker takes the lead to offer wireless charging systems for electric vehicles
The Motley Fool
Volkswagen plans to offer wireless charging for its plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles beginning in about 2017, which would make it the first automaker to offer such a factory option, unless a rival beats it to the punch. If another automaker does cruise by VW on this front, it will probably be Toyota Motors, as the Japanese automaker has recently begun verification testing of its wireless technology with the Prius. Nissan Motors, BMW, Mercedes' parent Daimler, and Geely's Volvo unit are also reportedly developing and testing wireless charging tech.
Keeping the promise of wireless charging
Wireless charging is a promise yet to be kept.
For several years, hardware makers have been talking about how we'll be able to wirelessly charge our devices anywhere, cutting the very last cord. Yet, while there are several smartphone models and a few concept devices that use it, wireless charging is yet to become a widespread phenomenon.
Awesome new wireless charging technology can power 40 phones at once
If you're a regular visitor to TechnoBuffalo you’ve probably noticed that we're a little obsessed with wireless charging. So when we learned about the technology being developed at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology it pretty much blew our minds. The South Korean research center has developed a new system for wireless charging that can power up to 40 smartphones at the same time from up to five meters away, potentially making power cords a thing of the past.
Averna PMA Wireless Receiver Tester
The Averna PMA Wireless Receiver Tester is available to companies developing PMA compatible products. The tester runs automated steps to verify the performance of receiver devices using the PMA specifications. This approach can dramatically speed up development and reduce the risk of any unknowns prior to certification. Check out a video of the tester here!
Kyocera Phone with PMA Built-in:
Kyocera Hydro Vibe is the newest addition to Kyocera's successful Hydro Series of waterproof Android smartphones, all of which can be completely submerged in up to one meter (3.28 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes. Most importantly, the Kyocera Hydro VIBE has released with PMA wireless charging built-in!
Wireless Charging Consumer Insights Report: IHS Technology will soon expand its industry-leading coverage of the wireless power and charging market with a new offering: Wireless Charging Consumer Insights –2014
Launch of the PMA Network Working Group (NWG): This is an important evolution of the PMA technical specifications and we encourage any interested company to get involved by updating their profile on the PMA Workspace. Contributions are already being accepted and the next scheduled meeting can be found in the Working Group Updates section.
New Marketing Director: Chris Romano is stepping into the role of Marketing and Membership Director for the PMA. Chris has over 15 years of marketing and business development experience as well as experience bringing world-class technology to market. Shea Clymer will be pursuing other opportunities in Austin, Texas, but would like to thank all the PMA members for their support and dedication to the standard. Please help us welcome Chris to the team!
